Not long ago, I was spending all of my time focused on mental health and inclusion work in East Africa.
The conversations I was having weren’t about motivation.
They were about resilience.
Hope.
Future self.
What helps people keep going when life is objectively hard.
And that work reinforced something I’d intuited after decades studying behavior change:
Humans do not fail because they lack willpower.
They fail because they’ve been taught that sustainable change is supposed to feel intense.
I joined Felicia Romero on the Hi Felicia podcast for a conversation about consistency, identity, burnout, and why so many of us keep believing we’re “starting over.”
We chatted about:
• why streak culture can backfire
• why intensity is often overrated
• how diet culture conditioned people to chase short-term results
• why rebuilding trust with yourself matters more than forcing yourself
• and what consistency really looks like when life gets messy
