Here we are highlighting five design led innovations that are rather clever, or might make you smile - here are five of our favourite ‘Key Design Innovations’ that have been complied by reviewing the Design Trend Reports we produce through out the year (presented to the design groups of many car brands globally) — for a lighthearted share during the festive season…

1. Kia Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy - A family of multi-purpose vehicles – offering personal/private transportation, and commercial vehicles (the first time in the brands history) also. These new designs subtly evolve the established Kia EV-series design language towards a significant new strategic direction for Kia: commercial vehicles and mobility systems. Image © Kia. 2. ItalDesign Quintessenza concept - This EV GT with a pickup truck-style bed hidden beneath a canopy, designed for outdoor enthusiasts who live in urban areas, is a clever and trend leading blend of SUV and GT that is rewriting the latter typology to better align with customer’s use of the vehicle to escape to the outdoors. Xiaomi SU7 - total ecosystem approach - Under the strategy of ‘Human x Car x Home’ the SU7 integrates with the many other Xiaomi smart products the customer might have in their home (far beyond just their smartphone). Xiaomi are turning the interior into another form of ecosystem and encouraging third parties to develop hardware for it (e.g. smart child seats) also. See the full video here. Image © Xiaomi. 4. Deutsche Telekom App free AI Smartphone concept - Replacing apps with an AI concierge that, when an enquiry is made, builds a custom UI around the task it is completing at that moment to enable the customer to interact with the process. Clearly articulating the benefits of an AI led smartphone UX – and suggesting future UI design will need to be much more dynamic. See the full video here . Image © Deutsche Telekom. 5. Rimac Verne - An elevated two-seat autonomous experience - The idea of the autonomous vehicle (AV) is over sixty years old and has almost always been depicted, and then realised, as a four or more seat taxi design — until now. With the Rimac Verne the AV is presented as more car-like and less pod-like, and as an elevated two-seat only experience. As Rimac Chief Designer Adriano Mudri says: “9 out of 10 rides are used by 1 or 2 people. Therefore, we can satisfy most of all trips with a two-seater and create unmatched interior space in a compact-sized vehicle.” Image © Rimac.
