The Raven - Aluminum Toggle?

Predictably, the introduction of the Raven has sparked some discussion. Two concerns were inevitable:

1. “If it’s dropped, could it develop micro-fractures?”

2. “Could it be a dangerous projectile when pulled from height?”

1) DROPPING & “MICRO-FRACTURES”

This concern mostly applies to a Raven used as a bare toggle -- pulled with a thin pull cord and nothing attached to slow it down or absorb impact.

That’s not how the Raven is intended to be used most of the time. The Raven was designed as a Totem + toggle capability, specifically to support releasable/contingency options such as:

- Jester Rigging + last person descends with Throttle Mode

- Releasable block rigging

- Transient Releasable Rigging Point (TRRP)

Also: the “aluminum = stress fractures if dropped” idea persists, but it has been tested and repeatedly debunked. The information presented in this video shows why this concern doesn’t hold up..

2) FALLING OBJECT HAZARD

Falling objects are a real hazard -- period. Pulling ropes at the base of a rappel should always be done with awareness and spacing. When you pull ropes, assume something could come down: rocks, sand, or hardware. Stay out of the fall line, communicate, and pull with intention.

MY STANCE ON TOGGLES (FOR CONTEXT)

I’m wary of toggle over-use. They’re a tool in the toolbox--useful when appropriate, but often over-used, especially by beginners who aren’t proficient at self-rescue. Too often the choice is driven by social pressure, not sound judgment.

BOTTOM LINE

If you only want a toggle, you have no reason to buy a Raven.

The Raven is for people who want the Totem-style functionality plus the option for releasable contingencies / transient releasable rigging, and only occasionally the “toggle” role when it’s truly appropriate.
