When you want to do something and don’t execute on it, all of a sudden seasons have gone by.
And if you’re not careful, years go by too, and the delta between the Person You Could Be and the Person You Are grows (potentially uncomfortably) large.
At work, I (we) have objectives and key results and other achievement seatbelts that keep us buckled in, progressing towards our own goals. But when it comes to my personal, typically professional-adjacent goals, I lack a similar structure.
That’s not to say I haven’t set SMART-esque goals, or rigorously behavioral scientist’ed myself, based on what I know best.
I have. But I also have more than my fair share of Side Quests that have fallen off the tracks (or truthfully failed to launch altogether).
The habit muscle that I’m looking to strengthen as I write this involve just that… writing.
I want to write more.
And, for stretches, I’ve managed to actually write. But never consistently, or consistently enough to meet my own standards. I still have so many ideas and things that I want to write about that I text myself on a daily basis that never get written.
I think to myself, I’ll create a website (or Newsletter!) where I write about how social narratives affect our daily lives, or the panoply of reasons why people don’t adopt (or in fact hate) AI, or how habit formation has a sweet spot at various points in the GLP-1 journey.
I think about writing, yet I don’t write.
Constraints (self-imposed, to be clear) have been clobbering me.
I get stuck on what I’m writing, worried that if I jab step in one direction (Knicks in 5), I need to find my stride. Worried that I need to be On Brand (which involves finding a Brand in the first place, cue spiral in lieu of writing).
For many weeks months I tried (truly tirelessly) to find a hole to pigeon myself into, scrolling corporate social media and Slack channels for independent operators and fellow [topic] nerds, while thinking about all the ways in which I didn’t want to commit to the bit that anyone was presenting to me but rather across a bunch of them.
For a while, I had Claude support shame me (more on that to come), trying to keep my content focused, telling me how Load-Bearing my ideas were.
It worked. Until it didn’t. I felt boxed in by the neat algorithmic-benefitting fences that everyone else’s interests seemingly existed within.
So instead of doing (writing) something, I did nothing.
I want(ed) to write about different things
We’ve tipped into the second half of 2026. I’m sick of losing days, weeks, and good ideas, and a hefty amount of mediocre ones too.
Why not throw them on the internet and be a poster child for posterity.
