The Discipline of Enough

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much of modern life asks us to want more.

More options.
More upgrades.
More things to optimize.
More ways to improve ourselves, our homes, our routines.

And while access and abundance can be beautiful, I think there is a point where more stops feeling luxurious and starts feeling loud.

As I look at my own life, I’m interested in the luxury of enough. Not in a minimalistic, scarce, or overly disciplined way — but in a deeply considered one.

At the Studio, when is comes to designing for our clients, we view excess as often reactive. It comes from a fear that something is missing.

Enough requires trust.

Trust that the room does not need one more object.
Trust that quality matters more than quantity.
Trust that not every wall needs filling.
Trust that a home can feel layered without being full.

This is something I think about often when designing.

Sometimes the right choice is not what to add — but what to remove.

What to simplify.
What to let breathe.
What to leave alone.

And I think that applies beautifully to life as well.

Not everything needs to be improved, expanded, or reinvented all the time.

Sometimes enough is not a compromise.

Sometimes it’s the whole point.

Until next time,

Katie
