For most of human history, school wasn’t where learning happened. It was where some learning happened, for some people, in some societies. But the majority of what human beings needed to know — how to build things, grow food, navigate rivers, raise children, heal the sick, and participate in civic life, was learned outside of any formal institution.
This might seem like an inconvenient fact for someone writing a history of self-directed learning in the context of formal schooling. I prefer to think of it as liberating. Because once you see how learning actually happened for most of human history, you start to ask different questions about what formal schooling is actually for.
We’re now in the third article in this series. We’ve left Aristotle’s Athens, and we’re moving through the medieval period toward the Renaissance. This is not the most glamorous stretch of education history. There are no founding geniuses, no philosophical movements with catchy names. But it is arguably the era that most directly shaped how most people on earth actually learned most of what they knew. Because this is the age of apprenticeship.
The guild system, which dominated European economic life from roughly the 11th through the 17th centuries, was organized around a form of learning that was entirely experiential and entirely practical. A young person who wanted to learn a craft (stonecutting, weaving, blacksmithing, carpentry) would be bound to a master craftsperson for a period of years, typically beginning in early adolescence. They would live in the master’s home, work in the master’s shop, and learn the trade by doing it alongside someone who had already mastered it.
There was no curriculum. There were no textbooks, no tests, and no grades. Learning was embedded in production. The apprentice learned the craft by making real things for real customers, under the guidance of a person who knew what quality looked like. Mistakes had consequences: real consequences in the real world, not grades. A seam that would not hold. A joint that would not bear weight. A loaf that no one would buy.
Researchers today would call this situated learning — the idea that the most effective learning happens when it is embedded in the authentic activity it is meant to serve, rather than abstracted into a classroom context. The apprentice did not study carpentry; the apprentice was a carpenter, in a carpentry shop, doing carpentry work. The learning and the doing were not separate activities. They were the same activity.
The progression from apprentice to journeyman to master was also significant. The apprentice began with observation and simple tasks, gradually took on more complex work, and eventually (after years of practice and the creation of a “masterwork” that demonstrated their skill) achieved the status of master and could take on apprentices of their own. Advancement depended on demonstrated competence, not on the passage of time.
If any of this sounds familiar to educators who work in project-based, mastery-based, or self-directed learning environments, it should. The guild model anticipated many of the pedagogical principles that progressive educators would formalize in the 20th century: learning by doing, feedback from a knowledgeable guide, mastery as the criterion for advancement, and the production of something real as both the vehicle and the evidence of learning.
But the medieval period also contained a development that would ultimately do more to democratize learning than any single institutional reform: the printing press. In approximately 1440, Johannes Gutenberg, a goldsmith and craftsperson in Mainz, Germany, invented a workable system of movable type. Within 50 years, some 20 million books had been printed across Europe. Within another century, literacy rates were climbing in ways that would have been unimaginable in the manuscript era.
Before the printing press, books were hand-copied, typically by monks in monasteries. A single Bible might take a monk years to complete. Books were expensive, rare, and available primarily to the institutional church and the aristocracy. The printing press changed all of that. For the first time, knowledge could be mass-produced and widely distributed. And this had profound implications for self-directed learning.
When books were rare, learning depended on access to a human expert. If you wanted to know something, you needed to find someone who knew it and could teach you. The printing press created the possibility of a different model: the self-educated reader, learning independently from texts. You still needed to be literate, and the spread of literacy was itself a gradual and uneven process. But the printing press began to detach learning from institutional access in a way that had never been possible before.
The Protestant Reformation, which began in the early 16th century, accelerated this process. Martin Luther’s insistence on the authority of scripture over papal tradition created a demand for individual literacy. Every Christian, Luther argued, needed to be able to read the Bible for themselves. This was, among other things, an argument for universal literacy and for each individual’s capacity to access and interpret knowledge directly, without institutional mediation.
We can see similar dynamics playing out today. The internet has done to access to information what the printing press did to access to books: made it cheap, abundant, and available to anyone with a connection. And just as the printing press did not immediately democratize learning — it took centuries, accompanied by enormous social upheaval and resistance — the internet has not automatically produced a generation of self-directed learners. Access to information isn’t the same as the capacity to direct one’s own learning.
That distinction (between access and capacity) is one of the most important questions in SDL research and practice today. What does it actually take to become a self-directed learner? The medieval guild system had an answer: you need a knowledgeable guide, an authentic context, real work to do, and feedback connected to real outcomes. The printing press pointed toward another piece of the answer: you need access to resources. Between them, these two developments give us an early portrait of what self-directed learning requires.
Authentic work, honest feedback, access to resources, and a community of people who take the learning seriously. Those ingredients were present in the guild workshop of a 13th-century cobbler in Florence. They’re present in the best self-directed learning environments I visit today. The specific technology changes. The fundamental conditions don’t.
