Trying to fill God-sized holes with romantic love.

What if our deepest longing for romantic union is really about something we can't achieve in partnership?

A spontaneous teaching I shared with my women’s group while driving (pardon the car-audio-quality).

What if the deepest longing you feel for partnership... isn’t actually for partnership?

This isn’t a sermon or an argument for any religious beliefs.

I believe one of the greatest spiritual misunderstandings we carry is that another person can fulfill the deepest longing of our soul.

I don’t think they can.

I think what we’re ultimately longing for is a union that doesn’t exist in any sustainable way inside of partnership with another human.

Union with the divine, union with the field of love, union with our own true nature.

And because we’ve forgotten what that feels like, or we only experience in these little glimmers during lovemaking or plant-medicine experiences or other fleeting states, we project that longing onto romantic partnership. We imagine that when we finally meet “the one,” we’ll arrive.

Of course I believe partnership can be extraordinary. I teach relationship skills for a living.

I believe healthy partnership is one of the most profound paths of spiritual growth available to us.

But I don’t believe your partner was ever meant to become your source of love. I think they’re meant to reveal all the places you still believe you’re separate from it.

That’s a very different relationship. No wonder people don’t meet the “one” and suddenly feel peaceful, loved and fulfilled forevermore.

In this mini podcast, I explore why the deepest fulfillment we’re seeking isn’t something another person can give us, and why that realization actually makes love more available, not less.

I’d love to know what comes up for you.

Does this feel like an exhale...or does it bring up resistance?
