Night Owl Envies the Mourning Dove record release shows continue this week! The band plays Groton (3/5), Northampton (3/6 low tix), and Burlington (3/7) this week with special guest Annie Lynch. We just added Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs (this small room usually sells out, get em while they last!) and Bennington Theater (handful of tickets left) next week.

Our tour last month zoomed up the west coast from LA to Bellingham. I wish I had a bit more time to spend in each beautiful spot - we pressed on with long miles to cover in a hurry, but the shows were worth it. Live in person music feels more necessary to me now than ever, and it seemed like the folks coming out to our shows felt the same.

We flew out just ahead of the big storm that dumped snow on my little family in Vermont. I FaceTimed my kids from sunny LA, palm trees smirking in the background. It felt good to take a quick break from winter but I don’t enjoy feeling so far away from my people. This was a difficult tour in some ways - I dragged my spirit to each show - feeling pummeled and whiplashed watching the best and worst of our country convulse in Minneapolis. And then the magic energy of music takes over and the songs and band and people gathered in a small room lifts our collective spirits. Many rooms were sold out and the big rooms surprisingly more full than usual. I get the feeling everyone’s looking for a way to reckon with their own rage / confusion / sadness and they’re looking for an antidote in live music and folk clubs. Thank you to everyone who’s set aside the time to spend a night with us.

I am so looking forward to these special record release shows with Annie Lynch. She’ll open the shows with her set and join my set for a few. I’ve been a fan since Annie and the Beekeepers days and I adore her record My Bonneville. “An Island” hits so hard, a classic. I sing “Wrong Darlin” around the house, one of those melodies that never leaves your side. Her melodies and words and singing are sublime and I’m so looking forward to hearing her set and singing together. Don’t miss these special shows folks!

This record release touring has thrown me back a decade and reconnected to my Reckless Skyline era. We’ve been playing songs from both records in these shows. Both records were written from a place of desperation and joy which is a solid recipe and launching pad for necessary art. Reckless Skyline was a “now or never” moment for me. I had taken the leap and quit my job to make a real record. And a hairline crack in my life had opened up into a grand canyon with just a little pressure. That record marks a time where I had one foot on each plate as they separated and was the moment before I picked a side to leap to. It was the record that launched me into a life of playing live music.

Night Owl was recorded in a similar moment of now or never - a baby was on the way, and I knew my attention would soon be completely on the homefront for a bit. Songs burning a hole in my pocket urgently wanted to be recorded while still young and fresh. My little world and the world around us all changes dramatically and at such a fast pace - I wanted to record those songs in that moment and not wait for the world to change again before these songs were realized on a record. Night Owl returned me to a more purely focused state of mind and music I had before kids. Playing live music with an electric band after a deep dive into domesticity and raising two little boys has me feeling brand new again, and this record’s release tour has been a return to the road in a real way.

We have a few shows left and a few festivals yet to announce this summer. I haven’t yet hit some of my usual haunts with the band and plan to (looking at you, Portland, Portsmouth, NYC, NJ, PA, DC - we will get there!) The bulk of this record release tour is coming to a close this month and I wanted to shout from the rooftops, THANK YOU for coming out to these shows! It’s been a long while since I toured like this — under my own name and with a full band. I wasn’t sure if anyone would still be out there answering the call, buying tickets or even remembering my music exists, but you truly surprised me. Thank you! More to come!
