After having produced and directed hundreds of videos, music clips, produced a feature film, and while working on the animation of my current documentary (a very slow and meditative process), I felt the need to pause and reflect on the first short film I ever directed, back in 2012 called “A Quiet Immersion”.
I remember drawing and imagining every frame before I shot it. Back then, I used to create such detailed storyboards. But as I got busier, and the productions grew larger, I slowly drifted away from beginning each project by drawing. I’m not a Picasso or a Dalí, yet that’s the beauty of drawing: approaching the image through sketches, discovering meaning in composition, and allowing a shot list to emerge organically from imagination.
As I move into the pre-production phases of new projects, I wanted to revisit some of the images I created while preparing for my first short film as a director. It’s an experimental piece called A Quiet Immersion, a visual meditation that marked a personal rebirth, my transition into a new life, far from my friends, my family, and everything I once knew.
At that time, I couldn’t explain it to anyone. In a moment of silence, I simply disappeared. My perspective shifted completely, and I took the brave decision to change my environment entirely and pursue film school. I shot this short film right before beginning that new chapter in Santa Barbara. It was a very intimate experience.
Art often becomes the bridge between our inner transformation and the outer world. For many artists, profound change happens quietly, without announcements or explanations. The most important decisions are often better made in silence, allowing them to unfold naturally, like a seed taking root underground.
Remembering my roots reminds me that silence can be the most powerful dialogue between who we were and who we are becoming.
