When I came into the industry years ago, if someone told me I’d be using AI to generate 3D models, automate drawing reviews, create site plans from aerial imagery, and collect site data with a handheld scanner, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.
Yet here we are.
What’s interesting is that the biggest productivity gains I’m seeing aren’t coming from replacing designers or engineers; they’re coming from eliminating repetitive tasks that nobody enjoys doing in the first place.
Things like manually updating title blocks, reviewing hundreds of markups, tracing existing conditions, organizing drawing sets, or spending hours collecting field measurements.
The firms embracing automation aren’t necessarily working harder or even replacing roles.
