First of all I am openly plagiarizing Kate Manne (who better to rip off?) who recently and succinctly explained (and here the plagiarism begins) an “ annoying change in Substack settings. If you’re getting this email, but didn’t get an email with my last post on stopping my students using AI this past semester, that’s likely because you have the Substack app and need to change the setting to get emails only, or get emails and app notifications (depending on your preference). Here are instructions on exactly how to do that. Otherwise, the app will skip emailing you at all, and prioritize sending you app notifications about my posts (which I personally find annoying and ended up turning off).
I hope this email helps, and is not itself annoying!” End plagiarism moment. Also if you are not yet subscribed to Kate Manne’s substack - truly - how are you getting through this moment in history we find ourselves??
And a bit of news from myself! (feel free to plagiarize it) My podcast, Busy Body is in the process of moving to Patreon. I will keep posting updates here, on Substack, that a new episode is out, but to listen to it you’ll be following a link instead of it opening right here in Substack (pretty sure…).
I will keep publishing essays here on Substack. I have no plans to leave this platform. The move to Patreon is because I was recently invited to a podcast schmooze party and learned that it’s easier for a podcast to be shared, and thus grow, on Patreon as well as monetize it in an organized manner. It costs me about $200 out of pocket per episode so my very first goal is simply to cover that cost each month. There will be Patreon-only episodes that are a little edgier, a little more private, if you will. There will be listener ‘mail-bag’ episodes (incoming: Cadence rants). I’m looking forward to it. You all will be the first to hear when the Patreon feed active.
I will keep posting essays here as usual. I am deep in work on my book which often means I start an essay here, and realize it’s actually a chapter and thus shouldn’t be self published (oops!). Or I am working on a chapter and realize one part is actually a Substack essay and hop over here. This is to say I have not yet turned ‘subscribers only’ on at Substack because I don’t have any specific content I would want a bit more exclusive… I also welcome any ideas you might have for shorter pieces or Q&A style posts! Please comment and let me know what you’d like to read or read me talking about. Given that, that doesn’t mean this effort is easy or takes zero time. The more income that happens through Substack, the more time I am able to spend here writing. If you want more writing, please consider becoming a paid subscriber.
Now onto todays post!
I co host Virtual Run Club with my colleague, Coach Rachel. We’ve been doing this program since 2020 and it is truly one of my favorite courses because we get to see such a huge rate of growth from beginning to end. Most coach calls start with people sharing that they either don’t own running shoes, or imagine they will never be able to run regularly but, ‘here they are’, anyway. Which is exactly our point. VRC is EXTREMELY beginner friendly.
You can basically hate running and happily be welcomed by us. We would actually love to have any and all who hate running. The purpose of the course is to disavow you of your preconceived ideas of what running is ‘supposed’ to be. We teach a very accessible approach with the goal of getting you running consistently WITHOUT injury - which is also the major sticking point for most self-described ‘not runners’.
But don’t just take my word for it! Coach Rachel has been on the pod numerous times and each conversation we’ve had is so inspiring. If you wanted to do a little Busy Body binge-listen, you’d get a heart warming glow-up of both of our own personal run journeys over the years. I myself, started out co-hosting VRC having not run more than 3 miles at a time since I was a teenager. Now I’m training for my 4th half-marathon and am registered for a crazy Alpine 20km race set in Transylvania this spring… because where else?? Coach Rachel is now an Ultra competitor which was definitely not on her 3 year plan…3 years ago. #inspired
