What If You Stopped Pretzeling Yourself to Fit?

Jennifer Griffith · Both Sides of Life

Dear friends,

I’m back from my book tour filled with gratitude, incredible conversations, and a long list of lessons—more on those later.

While I was on the road meeting new people, it was a chance meeting on a ski slope that led to a conversation with one of the literary world’s shining stars.

There I was, struggling through a ski clinic, when a young woman approached me and said, “I heard you're an author. My mom is, too—Jane Green.” And just like that, the universe handed me one of those unexpected gifts: a chance to talk with someone whose work I’d long admired—and who turned out to be even more extraordinary in conversation than on the page.

Jane Green has sold more than 10 million books. She helped launch a genre. She’s written 22 novels, has an advice column with the Daily Mail, and recently made a massive life change: leaving behind her suburban life in Connecticut—and her marriage—to move to Marrakesh.

What we talked about went far beyond books. We talked about what it means to stop “pretzeling” yourself to meet others’ expectations, and instead ask: What do I want? Who am I, really?

For Jane, Marrakesh wasn’t just a destination. It was an awakening.

She described the noise, color, and chaos of the city as something that brought her back to life. After years of conforming—trying to be the perfect mother, wife, author, woman—she realized she had lost sight of herself. In Morocco, she found a space where she could finally feel like herself again.

It wasn’t easy. She speaks candidly about leaving a marriage, redefining success, and confronting her own self-doubt and shame. But that’s what makes this conversation so powerful: Jane doesn’t give us the Instagram version of reinvention. She gives us the raw, real one. And through it all, her wisdom shines.

Whether you’re a fan of her novels, her Daily Mail advice column, or you’ve never read a word she’s written, this is a conversation you’ll want to hear.

Jane’s Reflections That Stayed With Me

💡 “Who would you be if you stopped caring what anybody thought about you?”
This question was a turning point for Jane. It could be for any of us.

💡 “You don’t have to end your marriage and move to Marrakesh…”
…but you do have to ask what’s true for you. Big change doesn’t require drama—it requires honesty.

💡 “Shame cannot exist in the sunlight.”
The stories we hide are often the ones that can connect us the most.

💡 “Writing is a job. Not magic.”
Jane credits her journalist background for her discipline. She’s prolific not because she waits for inspiration, but because she shows up—every day.

💡 “The posts that resonate most are the ones where I’m the most real.”
On social media and in life, authenticity beats polish.

Your Invitation to Reflect: If Jane’s story strikes a chord, here are a few questions you might ask yourself.

  • What have I been “pretzeling” myself to fit into?

  • What parts of me feel most alive — and when do I feel them?

  • Is there a version of my life I’ve been too afraid to imagine?
