I wanted to make use of some of the many neglected voice notes in my phone—recordings of song ideas collected over the years that I never got to bring to completion—while also practicing how to mix/produce music on Ableton. While I love performing live with an instrument, I’ve always wondered what would come out of freeing myself from the discipline of live performance.
So I found 2 song segments from 2021 and 2022 that had somewhat relatable themes and built out this song. The Instagram post below contains slides with the original voice notes that I drew from for this song if you want to hear how it all started. Honestly the music video happened because I thought I should entertain viewers if I wasn’t going to be performing and playing the way I usually do—so I hope you are entertained 😂
The whole process of recording and editing everything took a little over a month; I was editing the music video on CapCut on my phone during my commute because I shot the video on “cinematic” mode on my phone, which apparently is a file format that couldn’t be edited on my laptop. It was interesting putting myself on camera like this, and it was definitely an experience recording video with such high winds at the beach and with occasional onlookers probably wondering what I was up to!
Overall, I definitely learned a lot and am excited to see what comes out of another music video attempt in the near future. This song “404 not found” is ultimately about accepting change and letting go in order to enter new states of being (therefore, you won’t find me where I was before…get it? Ha.)
