Unless You're Portuguese...

You already know by now that IO Interactive blew it out of the park with 007: First Light. Reviewers enjoyed it, players adored it, and it sold extremely well. One aspect of the game that you might’ve seen highlighted is its attention to detail and how much work the developer went through to reward creative players— “always do the unexpected, right?”.

What you likely missed is one surprising detail in the game’s phenomenal voice cast. Here’s why finding a Portuguese actress in 007: First Light made me smile.

Theresa Lorca

For those of you who haven’t played the game, Theresa Lorca is one of the Bond girls. She shows up as target to protect during Chapter 8: Time To Die. Lorca is one of three people you need to track to protect from the villains.

She’s portrayed as a gorgeous, extremely smart, powerful woman who inevitably activates James Bond’s radar. As all other characters in First Light, she is expertly voice-acted, but stands out for one specific reason.

As soon as I heard her speak in the initial stages of the chapter, her accent sounded familiar. I was almost sure she was a native Portuguese speaker talking in English.

Progressing through the quest line led me to Ellis White, one of the two other targets. After completing his section of the level, you can just leave the area or engage into three optional dialogue interactions.

One of those is asking White if he has any plans for the night. That is when he mentions Theresa Lorca as “hot Portuguese chick” that he has his eyes on. As far as I could find, this is the only time the game says that Lorca is Portuguese.

So I went to IMDB searching for who voiced Theresa Lorca and, sure enough, it really was a native Portuguese speaker. Raquel Cipriano, known for The Wheel Of Time and Lisbon Noir, voices Lorca. Not only is she Portuguese, she’s mostly done Portuguese projects in her career.

Kudos to IO Interactive for having this much attention to detail, especially when the overwhelming majority of players will completely miss this. The dialogue which mentions Theresa’s nationality is optional and her accent is subtle enough to likely be impossible to identify by anyone who isn’t also a Portuguese speaker.

The ones who notice it, though, appreciate it, and I hope you do too now that you’re reading this. Cipriano did an excellent job as the seductive Lorca and was one of the most memorable characters outside of the main cast.

Is there any other subtle detail that you noticed in 007 First Light? Let me know in the comments.
