Sydnea Lewis · Busyness and Burnout

Hey Friends…
It’s been a full and fulfilling few weeks — the kind of busy that feels aligned, not overwhelming. I’ve been thinking a lot about how we define success, and how often “doing more” quietly replaces being well. This week’s podcast and blog both explore that space between achievement and rest — what it means to manage energy instead of time, and how sacred self-care helps us show up whole.

Let’s get into it.

In last week’s episode of Busyness and Burnout, I sat down with psychologist and coach Dr. Truth for a conversation that was equal parts grounding and affirming.

We talked about what burnout really looks like when you’re a high-achiever who keeps pushing, and how sacred self-care — prayer, meditation, stillness, and boundaries — helps us heal beyond the surface.

She reminded us that:

“Burnout is a sign to rest, not a signal to push harder.”

If you’ve ever felt guilty about slowing down or saying no, this episode will feel like permission to pause.

We’ve been taught to earn rest — to treat it as a reward instead of a right. But what if rest isn’t the end goal? What if it’s the strategy?

This week’s post dives into the deeper layers of burnout, energy management, and breaking free from the “Strong Black Woman” narrative that keeps so many of us exhausted. It’s about learning to honor rest as part of your success — not a break from it.

I just got back from California, where I spoke at the National AIGA Conference on burnout and creative sustainability— and the room was packed. Over 100 people showed up, and the energy reminded me just how many creatives are craving real conversations about rest, resilience, and reclaiming joy.

Coming up next, I’ll be exhibiting one of my paintings in a group show, Women Artists of the DMV. This one feels special — it’s art that reflects my ongoing exploration of chaos, balance, and creative flow.

Busy, yes — but in the best kind of way.

I’ve been doing micro check-ins throughout the day — pausing to ask, “What needs my attention right now?”

Sometimes it’s finishing a task.

Sometimes it’s getting outside for five minutes of sun.

Sometimes it’s just breathing before the next meeting.

Tiny resets, big difference.

Try it: Set one or two reminders a day to pause and check in with yourself. You’ll be surprised how quickly it shifts your energ

Inhale deeply through your nose for four counts.

Hold for two.

Exhale slowly through your mouth for six.

Do this three times.

You don’t have to earn your rest or prove your worth through exhaustion.

You are allowed to be full, rested, and radiant — and still ambitious.

Here’s to redefining success with softness.

Until next time,
