If you’re in Italy and you think “food experience,” the first things that come to mind are pasta-making or wine tasting. For lots of my students, it was their first time in Italy, and the most popular activity requested was a pasta-making workshop. I set out to find the best deal in our neighborhood, Trastevere, and finally settled on the restaurant Come ‘Na Vorta on Via di Santa Dorotea, which offered a pasta-making workshop that included tiramisù-making and an entire meal afterwards. They had enough space for 60 of us and were very patient with our varied skill levels. 3 chefs guided our experience, explaining each step to make fettuccine, which I will tell you about in this article. Let’s cook!

Me making pasta

Ingredients: 1 Egg, a small bowl of flour, and extra flour on the side (enough for 1 portion).

Step 1: Make a hole in the flour to crack the egg into and slowly mix the egg into the flour with a fork until it is completely combined.

Step 2: Roll the dough into a ball and let it sit for about 30 minutes. You know your dough is ready when you stick your finger into it, and it bounces back right away.

Step 3: Roll your dough flat, adding flour as needed to prevent it from sticking to your rolling pin. Then fold once inwards from both sides into the middle and repeat.

Step 4: Cut pasta vertically into pieces as wide as your pinky and then unravel each piece to create your fettuccine shape!

Step 5: Boil for about 2 minutes and enjoy with your favorite sauce!

My students and I had a blast! It was a great way to bond while getting our hands dirty, activating many parts of our brain, and then celebrating our final results with a pasta meal. We each walked away with a box of our handmade pasta, our tiramisù, and a personalized pasta-making certificate. I highly recommend this experience if you’re spending some time in Italy. Go with some friends or family and make a night out of it!

Grazie mille and wishing you the best food adventures,

Nadà
