Ashley F. “Yes, we can still utilize a plate diagram but can no longer make reference to “MyPlate”
Aidsa R. “Not in our hospital. We are still encouraged to use it if it makes it easier for our patients.”
Anonymous. “Yes, we got the notice at the end of last week at my VA location. We can't use MyPlate anymore, but they also haven't updated our education materials yet, so that's been fun.”
Stephanie K. “We're still using MyPlate at FL WIC but they have told us our nutrition materials are being updated. They didn't say specifically what they're updating yet.”
Darlene B. “We've stopped calling it MyPlate and just call it a Balanced Plate now. It hasn't changed the fact that we're teaching the plate method, no matter what you call it.”
Hunter O. “Yes! I work for WIC and we were told to purge all of our MyPlate resources! I may have kept a few in secret though.”
Angelia H. “…To clarify, we can use "healthy plate" or "plate method" materials, just not the "MyPlate" stuff.”
Fran A. “I just went ahead and removed it. I created a slide for presentations titled Make Healthy Food Choices. It’s basically a summary of the old dietary guidelines. I won’t teach the new recommendations. Also, fine to still use the Diabetes Plate from ADA.”

It’s great to see one of our former moderators, Harriet Smith, a RD in the UK, become the CEO and Founder of her own company, HRS Communications, a nutrition communications agency based in the UK.

1.Tell us about HRS Communications!

“We connect forward‑thinking food organisations with nutrition‑focused healthcare professionals through a strategic, three‑pronged approach centered on education, awareness and advocacy. We work in partnership with leading food, nutrition and medical nutrition brands around the world to help them maximise their impact within the nutrition space.
… many of our team members come from nutrition and dietetic backgrounds, so we understand how to effectively engage, connect with, and influence our clients’ target audiences.”

2.What sort of advice would you give RDs who want to break in to working with brands or agencies?

“…proactively reach out to brands where you believe you could add real value as an RD. If you don’t ask, you don’t get it…
I’ve grown and built HRS largely through networking, word‑of‑mouth recommendations, and being willing to say yes and work out the “how” later. Focus on building a strong portfolio of case studies, testimonials and examples of your work to support your pitches.
If possible, seek out work experience or internships within an agency environment. Experience gained both client‑side and agency‑side is equally valuable…Think creatively about how to leverage your background and experience to your advantage—and confidently pitch that value when approaching agencies for work.”

3.What’s your favorite meal to make for yourself or to have out?

“Like most dietitians, I’m a big foodie and love both cooking and eating out. I have a three‑year‑old son who’s a bit of a fussy eater, but absolutely loves Mexican food—especially fajitas….When I’m eating out, my favourite cuisines are Japanese (sushi) and Indian (King Prawn Bhuna!).”
