Don't Let AI Make You Soft: How to Keep Your Brain Sharp in the Age of AI

Are your synapses still firing when you’re using AI?

Hey everyone, Doug here.

Let’s say you're staring at a complex problem at work. Five years ago, you'd have grabbed a coffee and spent an hour thinking it through. Today? You fire up ChatGPT and get an answer in 30 seconds.

Convenient? Absolutely. But… what happens to our brains when we stop doing the heavy lifting?

Lately, I’ve been thinking more about how AI could make us… well, soft. Not soft in the sense of being empathetic (we could all use more of that), but soft in the sense of our brains. Our critical thinking. Our creativity.

I remember the early days of building things online. Every line of code, every design decision, every message – it was all raw effort. My brain was constantly churning, solving problems, figuring things out (StackOverflow anyone?).

But now, with AI it’s a game changer right? It’s easy to feel like AI is just going to do everything for us. Why bother thinking hard when ChatGPT can draft that email? Why brainstorm solutions when Perplexity can pull the data?

This isn't just my anecdote. Research, like the study from the Center for Strategic Corporate Foresight and Sustainability points to a real risk: cognitive offloading (source: https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4698/15/1/6). There was a strong negative correlation (r = −0.68) between AI tool use and critical thinking.

Think of it like this: if you stop lifting weights, your muscles atrophy. The same applies to your brain.

So, how do we get the incredible leverage of AI without sacrificing our intellectual muscle?

This isn't about avoiding AI. It's about using it strategically, like a personal trainer for your mind, not a remote control.

1. Treat AI as a Spark, Not the Fire.

You've got a blank page. Instead of asking AI to write the whole thing, ask it for ideas. Or questions. Or counter-arguments.

  • Action: When starting a project, replace "Write me a blog post on X" with "Give me 5 unique angles for a blog post on X" or "What are 3 common misconceptions about X?" This forces your brain to sift, synthesize, and build.

2. Demand More from Yourself Than from AI.

AI is great at generating content, but it's terrible at critical judgment. That's your job. This is where your brain gets its workout.

  • Action: Every AI output gets these three questions:

    • "Where could this be wrong?" (Go verify one claim)

    • "What's the opposite perspective?"

    • "What would my biggest skeptic say about this?"

3. Master the Art of the Prompt (and the Follow-Up).

Your prompts are conversations. The better you explain your needs, the better AI responds. But the real leverage comes from the iterative process.

  • Action: Take one AI-generated piece this week and refine it through 3-4 follow-up prompts: "Add more data to this point," "Rewrite this more directly," "Give me the counterargument." You're not just getting better output – you're training your brain to think iteratively.

In a world increasingly saturated with AI-generated content and solutions, your unique ability to think, to create, to critically evaluate, and to connect ideas is your most valuable asset. It's your moat.

Don't let the convenience of AI erode it.

Use AI to accelerate your work, to augment your intelligence, and to free up your time for the real thinking. Because when everyone else is coasting on AI, the ones who are still actively building their intellectual muscle are the ones who will truly build fast, and build to last.

Keep building,

Doug
