With their season slipping away, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a strong start from Paul Skenes, who allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings pitched.

Despite the solid outing, Skenes was pulled after 65 pitches. Taking a deeper look, in a season where Skenes' velocity has been way down, Tuesday night reached a new low.

Paul Skenes pulled after just 65 pitches tonight and stuff was down across the board ...

The four-seam velocity was down just a tad more than a mph, sitting at 95.7. The velocity on each of his pitches was down to some extent.

Skenes also spoke to the media after the game:

Asked Paul Skenes if he was surprised being pulled after 65 pitches: “Not really. If I were the manager I’d probably do it too. … Wish I could have gone more, but it is what it is.”

Even with the improved outing, it didn’t matter too much, as the offense couldn’t plate a run and didn’t register an extra-base hit. They didn’t even put a runner in scoring position throughout the entire night.

Hitters 1-5 went a combined 0-for-18 while the bottom four all recorded a base hit each.

Carmen Mlodzinski will get the start for the Pirates on Wednesday. He allowed five earned runs over three innings pitched in his last start.

As expected, Termarr Johnson was placed on the injured list on Tuesday after leaving a game over the weekend with a leg injury. As he was trying to beat out a throw at first, Johnson extended his leg out and landed awkwardly, with the leg bending the wrong way.

Trainers placed an air cast on Johnson, and he was taken away on a cart.
