It was a big game for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. They wrapped up a series against the Detroit Tigers before heading out west to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Paul Skenes also started, his first game since he was pulled after 65 pitches against the Marlins. Originally slated to pitch on Sunday, the Pirates pushed Skenes’ next start to Wednesday to give him a couple extra days of rest.
He walked four batters again, not making it out of the fifth inning. Although he worked around some added damage early in the game, he surrendered a pair of runs in the fifth, which eventually got him the hook.
Oneil Cruz got the Pirates on the board in the bottom of the first inning, punching a ball past shortstop Kevin McGonigle, scoring Brandon Lowe, but the Tigers responded with the next three runs to give them a 3-1 lead.
The bullpen, behind 1.2 innings from Gregory Soto, combined to keep the Tigers off the board the rest of the game.
That allowed the offense to use the long ball to tie, and eventually win, the game.
Rafael Flores pinch-hit for Henry Davis in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a solo home run—his fifth of the season—bringing the Pirates within one.
After working around a couple of hits, Mason Montgomery was able to get the Pirates to the bottom of the ninth with it still 3-2.
With one out, Flores took a 0-2 cutter deep for his second home run of the day, tying the game. Spencer Horwitz flew out, putting the Pirates one out away from heading to extra innings.
Lowe would take a 1-2 cutter deep and off the foul pole for the walk-off, giving the Pirates the win and bringing them within three games of a .500 record.
The Pirates will travel to Los Angeles and begin a three-game weekend series with the Dodgers on Friday.
