--------------------

The course syllabus was sent last night to those who have already enrolled.

The material for the first class includes the text “The Path Opens (1910-1920)” by Jean-Louis Rieupeyrout, author of the book The Western or The American Cinema par excellence.

In the text, Rieupeyrout writes the following about Griffith:

D. W. Griffith, an important name in the history of cinema! But, apart from The Birth of a Nation (1914-1915), which can be considered the “prototype of the American Civil War cycle Western” (A. Bazin), Griffith’s participation in the genre that interests us counts for little in the overall context of his work, which is far more considerable in other aspects.

(…)

Griffith establishes himself as a complete Western director, capable of handling both the civil epic and the military epic with equal skill. Impressive material resources were at his disposal. If we take Mrs. Griffith’s testimony, the film called The Massacre featured “several hundred horsemen and twice as many Native Americans.” The same scale was present in Martyrs of the Alamo, a 1915 work that recreates the famous episode of the resistance of 180 Texans besieged by 3,000 Mexicans in San Antonio during the Texas Revolution of 1835–1836.

The predilection for history that these works demonstrate, as well as the perfect mastery of a technique at the service of grand sets and numerous extras, announce The Birth of a Nation, the film in which Griffith covers an entire period in the life of a people. Cinephiles have erected a pedestal for this monument. President Wilson, speaking of it, declared: “It’s like he’s writing history with light.”

With this film, the Western genre seized the one hundred percent American epic. Since then, the genre has been closely linked to it. It gave life to a cinematic panel in which, before Griffith, films of more or less finished expression had already been included, but in a less explicit way: those of the less ambitious and less gifted precursors, but equally devoted to laying the foundations for mythification.

Glauber Rocha, who has a text of his own included in the course material, wrote the following about Griffith:

[In memory of my father Adamastor Bráulio Rocha]

The German expressionism of the 1914 war is romantic idealism revisited by Freudianism: the dream described by Literature can be expressed in the Theatre but above all in the Kynema which, invented by Edison & Lumière, is in Motion.

Méliès, who developed the technique of filming Fantazya, showed the expressionists the dreamlike possibilities of cinema.

These avant-garde movements were influenced by the Soviet Revolution of 1917, which drew inspiration from them.

Soviet aesthetics of the 1920s were revived by French surrealism of the 1920s and 1930s, which devoted itself to revolutionary theory through form, separating, through bourgeois decadence, the poetic skin from the social musculature of the historical skeleton and existential consciousness.

In 1915, David Wark Griffith, son of a Confederate colonel ruined by the 19th-century Civil War, films The Birth of a Nation in the United States.

Griffith, a typical product of North American neocapitalism (the North American neocapitalist mode of production produces the imperialist superstructure), is revolutionary in this new terrestrial space insofar as climatic differences (the American sun versus the European light) and religious differences (Protestantism seeks to establish the Promised Land) alter the practices of European culture confined to Catholic idealism, reformed by the pragmatic materialism of the industrial revolution.

Protestant capitalist society is rebuilt according to the new laws of democratic colonization: the Katholyk State does not impose God on man but leaves him free to find Him.

The Civil War divides Griffith: the North, in order to carry out the industrial revolution, abolished slavery and massacred the Southern landowners, who reacted with weapons in hand. The freed slaves were proletarianized or marginalized, and the Northern industry modernized the entire country: The Birth of a Nation is the vision of a failed Southerner who makes an idealistic critique of the industrializing brutality of the victorious North.

The Birth of a Nation is the Old Testament that excludes Black people from the historical process as a primitive race, electing white Protestant classes as the builders of the Nation.

Slaves paid the price for the North American economy, especially in the South, where they managed, as in Brazil, to defend their African culture in the face of the violence devoured and vomited up in the paganism of spirituets, blues, and jazz, which, in the 1920s, became the main critical language against the neurotic structures of imperialism in depression.

Excluding blacks (and Indians), Moses/Griffith sings of the birth of the white, Protestant, capitalist, democratic, liberal nation.

Protestantism is capitalist reformism, the father of Social Democracy, a step ahead of Catholic fascism but limited by the hypocrisy that justifies violence in the name of the ideals of wealth and happiness in Paradise.

Griffith preaches the democratization of capital according to individual merit but justifies violence as the ultimate expression of virtue: the phallic voracity of guns in the United States of America surpasses the biblical humanism of Cecil B. DeMille.

The cowboy and the gangster triumph, and the most that American cinema achieves after Griffith (with the exception of the European Charles Chaplin) is to combat violence in the name of a state representative of cowboys and gangsters: the enemy of the man who kills to steal (Jesse James) and the sheriff (Wyatt Earp) who kills the bandit who violates the laws of a state that lives off the robbery and murder of the proletariat.

Griffith’s heroes are legitimate adventurers: the enemies of Protestant civilization are Indians, blacks, and bandits.

Intolerance is the New Testament that warns of the Apocalypse: the State massacres the Christian Revolution, the State massacres Black people, and if the State insists on genocidal intolerance, it runs the risk of one day being subverted by the People.

Griffith’s progressive liberal democrat demands a new Civil War of Good against Evil: Look at the corruption of Nebuchadnezzar, Look at the corruption of this country impoverished by competition with European imperialism that disrupted the market with the First World War, Look at this country with no colonial prospects, Look at this country that is unconsciously heading toward the economic, social, and political crisis of 1929.

Griffith’s ideological radicalization is limited by the liberal reformism typical of North American capitalist Protestant idealism.

The ideologue Griffith dies with Intolerance.

Besides The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance, Griffith made many films and died trying to reform the system.

Protestant pastor, prophet without a following, misunderstood genius, bankrupt capitalist, marginal Victorian moralist (the cinematic son of novelist Charles Dickens), Griffith is the aexthetyk reincarnation of Abraham Lincoln, the President who won the Civil War and was assassinated in a theater.
