People often assume that ten years of Reiki practice will make them more sensitive. They imagine stronger sensations, deeper intuition, or increasingly dramatic experiences under their hands.
Sometimes those things happen. Often they do not.
What changes most reliably is something far less dramatic.
You become less reactive.
In the beginning, many practitioners feel compelled to constantly evaluate what is happening. They adjust their hands prematurely, search for confirmation that Reiki is working, and interpret every sensation as meaningful. Silence can feel uncomfortable because silence is often mistaken for failure.
With experience, that urgency begins to fade. The practitioner learns to remain present without constantly measuring the moment. Hands stay where they are placed. Attention becomes steadier. The need to know what is happening gives way to a willingness to simply be there.
The same change often appears outside the treatment room.
Many long-term practitioners find themselves interrupting people less often. They become slower to offer advice and less eager to fix every problem they encounter. Listening deepens because attention is no longer dominated by the need to respond.
The shift is not always obvious. It usually occurs gradually over years of repetition. One day you realize that situations which once provoked immediate reactions no longer have the same hold on you. Criticism feels less threatening. Frustration passes more quickly. Defensiveness arises less often.
This change is not necessarily mystical. It is the result of conditioning.
Every day a practitioner sits down for self-treatment, they practice returning. They place their hands, notice where attention has wandered, and come back. Over time, that repetition begins to reorganize response.
Eventually you discover that you no longer spend as much energy trying to calm yourself because you are less easily disturbed in the first place.
This is cultivation.
It is not primarily an insight. It is a change in habit, perception, and behavior.
Time alone does not produce this transformation. Ten years of talking about Reiki does not necessarily change anything. Ten years can pass while old patterns remain exactly as they were.
What refines a practitioner is repetition. Returning to the practice again and again. Returning when it feels meaningful and returning when it feels ordinary. Returning when progress is obvious and returning when nothing seems to be happening.
Ten years of time means very little.
Ten years of returning can change everything.
If you’ve found something similar in your own practice, you’re welcome to stay.
