There’s a war on seed oils. Artemis Simopoulos put the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of the modern Western diet at somewhere between 15:1 and 16.7:1 against an ancestral ratio close to 1:1. Her work has been cited for two decades as the case against seed oils, and the case is sound, but somewhere along the way, omega-6 fats (especially seed oils) became the scapegoat for modern metabolic dysfunction. The prevailing message: “avoid at all costs.”

This, frankly, is nonsense.

The ratio I measure on the fatty acid panels of my own patients often runs the other way. These are not people eating fast food. They have read the same literature, cleared every seed oil out of the kitchen, and taken high-dose fish oil daily for years. They’re not overloaded with omega-6s. They’re deficient. And paradoxically, they’re often over-supplemented with omega-3s. Their panels come back with depleted linoleic acid, low gamma linolenic acid and low arachidonic acid, and on the Kennedy Krieger profile I use, markers suggesting demyelination. They have corrected a population-level problem they did not personally have, and they have corrected it past the point where the correction stops helping.

This has real consequences. A cell membrane is built from fats. Strip out the omega-6 fats that form its structure and the membrane loses its integrity, the mitochondria inside it lose the voltage they run on, and the immune and neurological signalling that depends on that architecture starts to drift. Patients arrive describing exhaustion, cognitive dulling, and reactivity to everything, having spent years removing the raw material their membranes are made of. Meanwhile, excess omega-3s can suppress myelination, deplete arachidonic acid (AA), inhibit GLA pathways, and destabilise membranes.

In short, we’re treating modern illness with the wrong fats, and destabilizing the very membranes we need to heal.
