Invent Your Own Way

Your process does not have to look like anyone else’s. If you like to hold something in your hands and move it around, do that. Whatever gets the work out of your head and into the world counts.

This is something that I go back to constantly from my conversation with photographer / Creative Director Cait Oppermann. And to be honest I had no idea how our podcast would go. We’d never met but I’ve been a huge fan of her work so I shot my shot.

Lucky for me Cait was down and I got to step inside her world for an hour and I am so grateful she allowed me the opportunity.

Cait plans her whole year on index cards. The cheap ones. A dollar for a hundred. Written by hand. Goals, projects, the ideas she wants to chase. Year down to day. She tried doing it the way she thought she was supposed to. Notion, apps, all of it. None of it was her.

So she built her own thing instead.

I loved this because I have lived it. I have a graveyard of half-abandoned systems. I make my own notebooks on a sewing machine because nothing off the shelf ever felt right. For a long time I thought that was a flaw.

It is not.
