A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article looking at romance novels as an alternative to writing erotic shorts.

Write a Fucking Romance Novel

There’s a legendary Reddit post every erotica writer readers and contemplates, one hand on beating heart, one hand in empty purse,

I have to say that the prospect is looking attractive. Here’s why, apart from the reasons given in the article.

My strategy, as noted earlier, is to write a series of erotic short stories - I’m aiming for one a week - and as I build up more and more of a back catalogue, likewise build up a bigger readership. Typically these stories are several thousand words long, with increasing erotic tension culminating in a long sex scene taking up the last quarter of the story.

I started such a series under my own name but it wasn’t at all “kinky” and I wasn’t able to churn out stories at the pace I need.

So I began again under a new pen name and have four stories published but again I’m slowing down.

The problem is that I’m enjoying the plotting and character development more than the sex. In both cases, I’ve set up an environment with continuing characters and setting, punctuating it with good, long sex romps every few thousand words.

Don’t get me wrong, I like writing sex, it’s just that I can’t stand to have my characters jump into bed with each other for the flimsiest of reasons and have any respect for themselves the following day, when they will do it all over.

Fitting the sex in at more reasonable intervals and plot points in a long-form structure where I can develop the setting more fully is an attractive option.

I’ve all but abandoned my science fiction sex romp and work on my alternate series is slowing down.

The more I think about it, my science fiction series would work better in long form as an erotic romance novel.

Now ot’s one thing to talk about writing a romance novel but another to actually do it. Romance writers are a picky crew and if you say it’s romance but you miss a beat, they will jack up and one-star you into oblivion.

I’ve been researching the topic, making notes, working out the theory, having a whale of a time, to be honest.

And I have enough for a book.

A short book but one that covers the basics and gives examples and puts some stress on the importance of sex.

I’m probably five writing days away from finishing.

And that, the way I’m going nowadays, is probably the middle of April.

In other news, I might slow the “Honest Data” series down to a monthly report. Honestly, it’s moribund at the moment. I’m close to cracking a hundred dollars but it’s more of a slow climb rather than the exponential curve I had hoped for.

Probably a function of not writing a great many stories.

Once I’ve got the guide book nailed down, I’ll write the novel. And really clean up!
