Had the pleasure to produce an hour-long interview with 60 Minutes’ DON HEWITT. You know, the guy who produced and actually created the show. The show that was de rigueur viewing Sunday nights to so many, it occasionally garnered better ratings than any other show broadcast that week. Don had come to St. Louis and was a guest on Anne Keefe’s show. The format of the show fit into the ‘the voice of St. Louis’ credo the station followed scrupulously. Don was a good-looking guy so the radio listeners didn’t get the full impact of a confident man who gave out ‘leader’ vibes without any self-aggrandizement. He took questions from Anne and the audience, interrupted by station people who just wanted to compliment him and shake his hand. That was rare. Even in-studio guests like Henry Kissinger weren’t sought out in that way. Anne pushed him to give me the 60 Minutes test, mandatory for anyone who wanted to work with the TV show. I jumped at it. And I passed it. It wasn’t a test-test, but an exercise to find a person with limited information available. Found the person via their California teaching credentials. This was pre-Google. When you used the phone to get information. Mr. Hewitt later sent a handwritten note saying, ‘good job’. I didn’t get offered a job, but it was nonetheless a highlight during a tough time of my life. I wish he hadn’t left us when he did. What would he say about the horrendous decisions being made by CBS now? Perhaps it’s better he didn’t live to see such an achievement destroyed by people who lack integrity. Sending all remaining CBS employees courage (quoting CBS’ Dan Rather) to find positions away from this toxic situation. As expressed before, CBS is dead to me.
