No matter your role, if you’re cutting metal there’s an important question you should be asking “Am I using the right number of teeth?”

In the saw blade world this all comes down to “Zi” or tooth engagement. It’s a mathematical formula that helps you calculate how many teeth are in the cut at a given time.

Have too many teeth in the cut and the chips won’t evacuate. You’ll end up with bad cuts and bad blade life.

Have too few teeth in the cut and each tooth is working overtime, getting stressed out. Your cut surface will suffer and so will your blade life.

In general, the bigger the material, the fewer teeth needed to maintain a good Zi. Knowing when to switch and what blade to use is why you need a saw blade expert.
