As we wandered around Aerocity mall near the airport in New Delhi a couple participants of the TRVL photography workshop mentioned: “This really doesn’t feel like India. It feels like Dubai.”
I quipped, “oh wait until we get into Old Delhi!”
When many of us think of India we immediately gravitate to one word: chaos.
But as we drove from the airport to Old Delhi, I kept looking out of the bus window thinking, “wow, there’s so much beautiful green space here!”
The roads were less chaotic than I expected. It was less dirty than I expected. And it was far more “liveable” than I imagined.
When we arrived at Old Delhi, sure, I saw some of what I expected. I saw rickshaws piling into each other. I heard a constant cacophony of horns. I smelled the harsh air mixture of fumes, perfumes, and spices. I felt the heavy air and weight of the pace.
And while it was definitely a stabbing to the senses, it was also a bit of a shock that it didn’t feel more overwhelming.
It might have something to do with the fact that I just left Bolivia, but I didn’t feel this sense of “shit, this is intense”. In fact, I’d say I felt less overwhelmed than I did a couple weeks ago in Morocco.
I enjoyed our wander through the old part of Delhi.
