When I first considered taking the Australasian Veterinary Examination (AVE), I felt overwhelmed. I doubted my English skills and wondered how I could possibly sit through a practical exam or a full-day MCQ exam in a language other than my native tongue. But then I realized that this was a long journey, and it made no sense to think that way. Overthinking the entire process only intensified my anxiety. Instead, I started to break it down step by step.
First things first: I needed to pass the English exam. Only then would I start thinking about the MCQ, and the practical exam would be the final step. I told myself not to worry about studying for the MCQ until I had my English score in hand. This approach —taking it one step at a time— turned out to be the best advice I could give myself.
Before deciding which English exam to take, I’ve got opinions from different people. One vet on the AVE journey recommended the PTE as the best option to achieve the required proficient score. I wasn't familiar with the PTE, but I trusted her advice. After watching a few videos to understand the exam format, I decided to go for it.
Remember, the English exam doesn't measure how good your English skills are; it's just a test. You need to know the strategies to succeed (though, of course, knowing the language helps).
I have a few recommendations for the PTE that you might find useful, and I’ll share the links below.
Lastly, I'll provide a brief summary of the English exams recognised for the AVE and the required scores.
