GLP-1 Agonists and the Brain: There May Be Something There…
If you’ve been paying attention to medicine lately… or the news… or even if you’re just not living under a rock… you’ve heard the names Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. These GLP-1 receptor agonists were originally developed for type 2 diabetes. They mimic a gut hormone (GLP-1) that boosts insulin, slows digestion, and signals fullness to the brain. The synthetic versions last longer and turned out to be powerful weight-loss tools — sometimes dramatically so. Oprah herself credited them with “Relief and redemption.” The real intrigue, though, lies in what they might do for the brain.
