Well, hello there.
Has Japanese Breakfast covered this song yet?
Wow.
“What are you doing with your life?”
“Living.”
“Ah.”
—A recent conversation I had with myself at the Starbucks during my morning walk
I’m now past the Egghead arch in the One Piece manga. That’s over 1,000 chapters. I’m hooked.
Feels fitting that I started with chapter one back in late December and am finishing a little after Q1. What will be my big Q2 read? I’ll probably never commit to the anime (those early seasons are rough), but it’s nice to know that the latest seasons have stepped up their animation.
I’m loving One Piece and how ridiculous the world-building and power-ups have become—the classic anime power-trip—but it does remind me of this great video about manga and anime’s typical “Power Problem.” Funny enough, the moment I decided to fully commit to One Piece was the Marineford arc. Without spoiling anything, it’s a rare moment in One Piece with actual stakes and consequences, something Avatar is full of.
I’m trying to learn Chinese. As a native English speaker, I’m trying to wrap my head around tone. It’s a fascinating layer to language that makes sense in music. It also feels like trying to balance spinning plates—not just remembering the word, but being intentional with its presentation and delivery. Otherwise, I could get in trouble, like meaning to say mā (mother) but accidentally saying mǎ (horse). I don’t want to call my mom a horse.
I’ve been playing guitar ever since I was 12. Maybe a new language will feel comfortable after multiple decades of study and practice. Can’t hurt to try.
With love and all the good things,
-b
