Welcome to Gstaad, one of the most luxurious mountain towns in the world nestled in a remote part of the Swiss Alps.
Whether visiting in the off-season (spring and fall) or high season (summer and winter), you will enjoy the incredible scenery and leave feeling recharged and at peace.
Gstaad has gained recent recognition from the lovable Gstaad Guy, who pokes fun at the ultra-wealthy. Known not only for its incredible views, but also home to some of the most prestigious boarding schools in the world. Thus, drawing quite the crowd.
While yes, quite cozy, the wealth is evident with galleries from Hermes, Loro Piana, and Gagosian (to name a few). Which all feel a little ironic nestled within the cattle filled mountains. Yet somehow perfectly in place.
Sometimes I pinch myself reflecting on the world I have created for myself. Never did I imagine I’d get a text on a Monday that said,
“Meet me in Gstaad on Wednesday?”
I first met Allison Crawford in Paris, during her tenure in the city, and we became fast friends. She is one of those people who is so easy to be with, and has a wildly magnetic energy.
She’s since moved back to Austin (I joke: selfishly), yet we’ve stayed in touch, and she’s even helped me style a few interior design projects - see our most recent project reveal in Austin.
Her husband is Swiss, and while on their family holiday, she had a few extra days to travel solo. I was the lucky beneficiary!
With my family being from the French Alps (read more about Megeve here), I was excited to explore the Swiss side of the region.
I’ve long loved the “gingerbread charm” of the architecture in the area, and well, what’s not to love about the setting?

Gstaad: What To Know Before You Go
Getting to Gstaad is half the magic! I took the train from Paris to Geneva, transferred in Montreux, and then rode up to Gstaad, and honestly, the train journey alone is worth the trip.
Allison recommends spending a day or two in Montreaux (stay at the Fairmont) and visiting the Le Corbusier villa.
As we journeyed from Montreaux to Gstaad, I literally found myself pressing my face against the window. Truly magical in the most understated way. With views of lake Geneva and hills dotted with cattle, it’s lovely.
Once you arrive, there’s a brief moment of, “okay, now what?” because there are limited taxis and Ubers.
If you’re staying outside of town (likely) getting around is entirely by train or bus, or hotel transport. And while that sounds daunting (and not so glam), it’s actually one of the loveliest parts of the whole experience.
It’s essentially a little tram or trolley system that winds through the mountain, and it genuinely felt like being on the Matterhorn at Disneyland…minus the dramatic drops.
Note: Some hotels will arrange transfers, which is worth confirming in advance, but the train is intuitive and completely manageable once you’re in it.
Where to Stay in Gstaad
Ermitage Wellness Spa
We stayed at the Ermitage, and I loved it. It’s cozy and charming, but not a design-forward hotel, yet still cute (with some interesting design choices…). We had the junior suite, which I’d recommend specifically for the view. And for what it is, it’s quite affordable, especially if you travel during the shoulder seasons. You can opt for their included breakfast and meals, but I’d skip and instead venture into town.
Le Grand Bellevue
The luxurious 5-star Hotel Le Grand Bellevue is located in a park in the centre of Gstaad; it houses the chic Leonard's restaurant (awarded with 16 Gault and Millau points) with a gorgeous spa.
The Gstaad Palace
Aptly named, this is the most posh hotel to stay at. Set on a hill overlooking the beautiful town of Gstaad, the Gstaad Palace offers a breathtaking view of the majestic Swiss Alps, exceptional gastronomic options, and a lovely spa.
The Alpina
A somewhat newly opened hotel, and also quite luxe (5-star) is a great option close to town. It has four restaurants and a beautiful spa. If I were opting for luxury though, I think I’d go for the palace. ;)
The Mansard
Located right in the middle of town, this is a beautifully designed (a bit more modern) option at a friendlier price point. They also have a spa, but I’d recommend booking a treatment at one of the 5* hotels for a more luxe experience. Still, a great option that puts you in the heart of the town.
What To Do
We spent quite a bit of time at our hotel because many are wellness and spa focused, so there is much relaxation to be had!
Depending on where you’re staying, you’ll want to access the closest chairlift for a hike or skiing (depending on the season).
Enjoy a trip up the mountain for a hike which let’s be realistic, is a bit more of a nature walk, and I highly recommend the glass of champagne and french fries after. Non-negotiable, really…for sustenance.
Gstaad is known for its wonderful array of shopping, so regardless if you’re purchasing anything, window shopping is a must. You’ll find everything from tee-shirts to Hermes.
Beyond that, just wander. Half of the magic of Gstaad is simply relaxing, enjoying a cafe and cookie in the town center, and resting.

Where To Eat
Two places I’d send anyone: the Olden for dinner (get the penne a la vodka), and the Gstaad Palace Hotel for a meal that’s as much about the experience as the food.
Both are worth it. The Olden’s design is so darling, worth it if you’re into that kinda thing. ;)
We also enjoyed coffee and drinks at some of the cute little cafes in town. You’ll love the Gstaad Chocolate Shop as well!
