When we lost OG Boom on Millwright Street, people said that was it, the dream was over. Some people thought we’d never find a new space, never mind be able to build it back up in just a matter of weeks.
But here we are... New Boom is open, based at our new building Canalside, just on the edge of Leeds city centre. If you fancy joining us you can walk here down Wellington Street or along the canal. We’re working on a how to find us video right now!
The doors are open, the music’s back and the drinks are cold just in time for Summer. We’ve just hosted our first three gigs at the new location this week. The only reason this has been able to happen is because of you.
The building was previously a security central station. The entrance you now walk through used to be a telecoms hub.
The infrastructure was a nightmare, we can't even begin to describe the amount of cabling and systems we've had to understand and dismantle. But through pure graft, luck, and the right people showing up at the right time we’ve made it work.
We had to rip out the old Boom too, strip it back to how it was. Our core team couldn’t do it alone so we put out a call. A dozen people from our community turned up. Just regular folk who love the scene, some skilled in trade and some not, but all with the passion and dedication to help - no hesitation.
We couldn’t afford the vans or the labour to move everything in time, so Higher Power and Pest Control showed up. Alongside staff from Total Print Studio & Jailhouse Print Co - we made it happen, for us and for you. We didn’t just survive, we physically and emotionally carried this place on our backs.
We'll never forget the last night at Millwright Street. The entire crowd in the yard chanting “Boom.” That sound still lives in us and kept us going this past 6 weeks+.
We know it’s just the start, unfinished, with plenty of room for development. We still need a sign, we need outdoor furniture, the list goes on. We’re accessible - but we want to be better. Basically, there’s still work to do.
But the future starts now. Next Friday: Ratos de Porão from Brazil play our first full-scale international touring gig at the new Boom. It’s going to be great, it’s definitely going to be loud, and it’s history in the making. We know you want to be able to say "I was there."
