AI has entered the creative conversation today, and many writers are wondering what it means for their deeply personal work, like memoirs, teaching memoirs, and transformational nonfiction books.
Here’s our take on AI:
AI can help you organize a story or a process. It cannot help you tell the truth.
Memoir is not information. It’s revelation and inspiration through personal story.
Transformational nonfiction is not about answers. It’s about process, path, and insight.
AI can support a writer in several practical ways:
Helping you organize timelines and themes
Reflecting patterns back to you after a deep query on your initiation
Offering structure when the story feels overwhelming
Acting as a neutral mirror when you’re sorting through material
Used wisely, it can steady the process and assist you in guiding your structure.
But that’s where its usefulness ends.
AI has no relationship to grief, courage, forgiveness, or transcendence.
It has never crossed a threshold of change, dealt with a problem, and come back changed.
It cannot know:
What you’re ready to say—and what you’re not.
Where your story holds power, not just drama.
Which moments are meant to be written, and which are meant to be honored quietly.
How your experience becomes medicine for others.
It has no real-time experience and cannot touch on the emotional impact you want for your readers.
Memoir is an act of meaning-making. No algorithm can do that for you.
The real work of transformational writing happens when the writer’s ask the emotional driven questions that are not robotic answers:
Why this story?
Why now?
What did it cost you personally to learn what you know?
Who are you writing for—and what do you most want for them as they read your work?
These questions require discernment, safety, and personal reflection.
Writing a book or story in isolation with AI’s help or without it often leads to one of two outcomes:
Overexposure without integration
Insight without embodiment
Transformation happens in the relationship and conversation between you and your reader.
That’s why we created the Book Doulas Book Incubator—to support writers of memoir and transformational nonfiction in shaping their stories with depth, integrity, and care.
We use tools (including AI) thoughtfully while honoring the pride we have in owning our words.
Our course is as inspirational as it is informational–something AI can’t offer is the personal experience that brings information to life.
But we center our teachings around the human process— developing your unique writer’s voice, your readiness, the meaning you wish to bring, and the message you most want to deliver.
Your story doesn’t need to be rushed. It needs to be honored with emotional care.
