i want to apologise to long term fans for the absolute dearth of bangers in the last few months. i’ve been in a really jazzy place lately, and i can also put my hands up and say i’ve been trying to impress certain people (to, i would say, a reasonable degree of success). so to thank you for your patience, please enjoy a huge blast of house-y goodness from glasgow’s own hayley zalassi, a dj name so funny it kind of physically pains me.

this ep, innovations & lineage: the chicago project, is nuts good. emma dayhuff has been playing double bass in loads of big name line ups for about 20 years, worked for the chicago symphony orchestra as a recording engineer, and recently completed a phd at university of wisconsin (i would say ‘sorry babes’, as i do when i hear of anyone else who has befallen my own fate, but i think it’s irrelevant). this is her first release of her own compositions and work. FUCK. she is holding it doooown on the double bass, kahil el’zabar slamming the box, isiah collier squealing on the sax, the vocalisation range of dee alexander. all the tracks are nearly quarter of an hour long, recorded live at cafe coda in madison, wisconsin. you can watch a couple of the performances on youtube. mesmerising!!!!! obsessed!!!!!

this one goes out to phil who complained that there wasn’t enough information about what i personally had been up to in the last edition: heard this new one from fcukers on radio 1 in the waiting room at the sexual health clinic one tuesday morning lmao. we here at boogie nites endorse routine screenings ! the hold music is kind of banging too (iykyk).

some surprising hits from an algorithmically generated playlist which soundtracked my strutting around sheff on various saturday missions: going to the barber, going to m&s to buy some new smucks courtesy of a voucher from helping my colleague ben with some recordings (cheers ben!), going to tesco to get bits for the nice goat’s cheese gnocchi i was hosting that evening. i even kept playing it thru the gnocchi it was that good.

rare, kinda squelchy (?) 80s brooklyn boogie, made by an undercover r&b producer (george kerr) and re-released by numero group in 2007.

assumed this was american. but no! a group from england who were presumably put together in studio from the production company (satril) in order to make a disco tribute to bruce lee??? they were even called jkd band because of jeet kune do, bruce lee’s martial art. then after that album (dragon power) they made this lovely little disco number with a funky edge.

i love that covent garden suep are selling their pumpkin spice cartons atm. so nice, so warm, so tasty. i also love suep. i thought they were maybe a one and done band after their ep shop in 2023. but they’re back with more incredible post-punk-y electronic miseryscapes.

just some good old fashioned rock and roll!!!!!! it’s giving dazed and confused soundtrack.

dunno why i’m so inclined towards spoken word german tracks but it is a low-key running theme of my life. i have also worked on projects in german for the last five years and am basically no better at german than i was to begin with. i should obviously just accept my fate and move to berlin, like, yesterday.

the second edition of my new show on kitchen radio went out on the 25th, a neat and tidy little hour including a bunch of this playlist: emma dayhuff, yarni, parlor greens and la china de la gasolina.

• i will be playing at peddler market on friday 5th december. it’ll probably be cold so come warm me up (emotionally) with your sunny faces. coincidentally, it’s peddler’s 100th edition and going to peddler was one of the first ‘sheffield’ things i did after i moved here nearly four years ago. how nice.

• i’m playing after freakin CORTO.ALTO at the footprints jazz festival on 31st january. i’ve been a fan ever since jen gave me the nod to listen to these ‘nu jazz boys from the conservatoire who dress like they’re from castlemilk’ mid-lockdown, so to be spinnin tunes after them now - insane. get tickets! come! have fun!
