mid-month music media shouts

alright team. i’ve been collecting up some of my favourite non-linga-sound radio shows and mixes, plus some other bits and pieces of music-related media, to share with you. hope you’re having a lovely month. too hot? yes.

kitchen radio: control

this is a shout out to muad’dib of control, who i have never met, but is possibly lowkey one of my favourite djs in sheffield lol. i have only ever heard his mixes on kitchen. electro, synth-wave, techy, deep dark 80s-sounding stuff. although it’s definitely smoke-filled, pitch black, late night party music, it’s still a complete pleasure to listen to, even at my desk of a morning. big up!!!

kitchen radio: bigtender breakfast

i love producing gethin’s show! ambient, balearic, italo, chilled out saturday morning vibes, always with a poppin’ chat room and nice on-air interactions. one time badger the dog was there too and that was pretty great.

if we’re being real, my 9-11am saturday show is not a breakfast show, unless you by breakfast you mean dry rye toast, bitter espresso and some very sharp, almost off-season blackberries that i’m telling you you need to just sit with. bigtender is a true breakfast show with a big cup of tea and primo strawbs :) it also has a substack with show notes. wonderful.

kitchen radio: flaw collective

not one but TWO flaw collective shows to recommend to you. firstly, flaw collective: fruit fly lifecycle w/ nelis navidaddy and sportsdyke.

it’s a show playing music which choreographs the life cycle of the humble fruit fly!! great concept, excellent execution. i actually love a radio show that does an immersive experience. usually it’s pretending to be at a festival or a club, but why not have it living and dying as a fly?

secondly, flaw collective w/ dj wahala. we’re on the same line-ups semi-regularly, the ones where i have to play more late night music, and i always enjoy her mixes.

kadeena

i don’t know shit about gabber and hardcore. absolutely nothing. never felt i wanted to. i met kadeena thru kitchen; her enthusiasm for gabber is crazy infectious. she has a radio show (hardcore never dies) but has also recently started an instagram account all about it. i think that with the right time, attention, care and effort, you can come to appreciate any kind of music. granted, perhaps some more than others! i’m never gonna be a gabberhead, but i’m probably about six steps closer than i was.

the music industry is broken, from drew gooden (‘the road work ahead guy’)

i was so late to youtube as a concept. for about 7-8 years i used it exclusively to watch clips from gigs i had been to, to relive the magic, or clips from bands i was going to go and see soon, to check what the vibe might be like. at some point around 2018, 2019, i started using it a bit more because olivia told me i’d probably like bon appetit’s test kitchen (pre-cancellation). i did! i particularly loved the little series where alex delany tried one of everything on the menu in some new york eatery.

writing this has reignited my fiery envy towards alex delany1, a very pretty man who clearly oozes charisma, professed a great love for diet coke, felt comfortable enough to try everything on a menu, on camera no less!, and then got kinda famous on twitter for making spotify playlists with decent selections.

i believe he now bartends, djs, cuts about, maybe resells ‘books and objects’, and is a music and beverage consultant, making playlists and selecting wine for restaurants. excuse meee while the jealousy roils around within me like the sticky mess of bubbles in an unopened dc that’s been dropped and rolled around the back of a black cab bouncing down a pothole-y road.

he’s also just released an very average, charts-in-2012-feeling song. my primary reaction was ‘why didn’t they do a very basic music video for this?’. just them in line at a club, inside the club. surely this man has the connections to make that happen on the cheap.

but, like, get those myriad poor-pay-high-cultural-capital bags king. i’d love to be you! hope you’re good!

ok, back to the real star here: drew gooden was one of the first people i really got into purely as someone making content on youtube. someone i just watched for takes, cultural commentary, a bit of a laugh. me and kay keep up with ‘the boys’ (drew, danny, kurtis, sometimes eddy burback, mayybe jarvis johnson) and the quality is ofc variable, but drew has been putting out some Well Researched Bangers recently. his one about the state of the economy was excellent; this one about the state of the music industry was too. all the usual points about streaming services, record labels, but well illustrated and with an great pivot to his own (to date, secret) band.

in focus: peven everett [nts]

i did an instagram call out asking for people’s favourite peven everett tracks, because he is a headliner at we out here that, beyond gabriel, i just basically knew nothing about. i was sick fed up of feeling out of the loop when people said ‘oh my god, i can’t wait to see peven everett!’. thank you so much to everyone who submitted their faves, i listened to them all <3
