youtube for my youtube heads

🐥

to my new subscribers: hello! i’m a dj and broadcaster (and 🆕 promoter 🆕 ) based in sheffield, under the name linga sound. everything i do there is rooted in new jazz, funk, groove, etc, and if that’s why you’re here — that stuff will always be rounded up at the end of the newsletter

however, this substack is a much broader monthly digest of stuff i’ve been listening to: not just new stuff, not just jazz; broad brush, anything goes, plus a bit of a diary as well. the queer + heavily online gym bro sibling of my radio show.

to my old subscribers: heyyyy guys what’s up? tell me your news. xoxo

club action - yo majesty

the last couple of years, i feel like i’ve been sitting, waiting for The Summer to happen and then suddenly it’s september. a trip to shetland, hardly your first thought for a canonical summer holiday, but needs must. a sweet little staycation weekend in a northern english city. i met some friends in beer gardens; took some time off work to sit around my flat and crack thru some novels. all very pleasant.

it might be the weather, but something is in the air. that something is imbuing me with joie de vivre. a new raison d’etre. like this song. let’s go lesbian crunk!!!

a reel that kay and i have been sending back and forth for months

other tracks which are my own personal Sound of the Summer:

  • morocco - matt gold & dustin laurenzi

the vibration on dustin laurenzi’s saxophone here is gorgeous. captures a v ethio sound.

  • summer nights - dana & alden

    little bit khruangbin-y (complimentary)

  • ?jerk alfredo again gang? - kaicrewsade ft. jazzbois

absolutely mad for chicago’s kaicrewsade. 100% at the forefront of jazz rap in 2026. keep those mixtapes comin man.

i ran (so far away) - a flock of seagulls

of course, i still had to have a trip to shetland. hardly your first thought for a canonical summer holiday, but needs must, one might say. while everyone was melting here, we got fogged in at the airport for an extra night with the fam. this was a classic case of an earworm playing from a central european oldies station on their dab radio over dinner, possibly at the time my recently retired parents announced they were off on their first retirement holiday… to uzbekistan?

olbap - cosmic vibrations ft. dwight trible [mark de clive-lowe remix]

cosmic vibrations was a group of extremely high calibre spiritual jazz musicians in LA, brought together by vocalist dwight trible. they recorded together in 2018 and released an album, pathways and passages, in 2020. the original is absolutely incredible, expansive, north african percussion and his deep, resonant vocal, but since it’s summer i’ve been obsessing over this lovingly rendered remix from japanese-new zealand producer mark de clive-lowe. i work four days a week now, in part so i can focus on my ~creative pursuits~, and so i found myself walking home from nether edge on a friday morning, bopping past the botanics to this broken beat masterpiece.

blow it up with dynamite! - hill collective

brighton based jazz collective, surprisingly fucking good to run to. since i got on testosterone (happy one year anniversary!!) i have really been focused on getting more hench, and so running has taken a back seat. however, due to aforementioned testosterone and resulting shift in self-confidence about bro-ing down, i think this might be my last year in the non-binary category of the sheffield 10k and thus my last chance to be the fastest non-binary at the sheffield 10k. run e run!!

rio de felicidade - rosa maria

nice bit of brazilian boogie, also surprisingly good to run to.

also it was my birthday, i threw a party at grub records, a lovely time was had by all

cairo fm - alewya

love this. of course the el shab arrab beat is a complete vibe, but it’s the reference to zebra katz & njena reddd foxxx’s ima read that really hooked me in. and also made me feel slightly nauseous to realise that it is fourteen years since lee and i saw them supporting azealia banks at the o2 in glasgow 🤢

bring your love - madonna & sabrina carpenter

to touch grass and connect with the pop girlies i did a b2b listen of the charli xcx album, which i appreciate artistically but can’t really be bothered to listen to again, and the madonna album, which i loved.

let me be little a basic bitch as a treat
