favourite thing i heard all month by miles. nubiyan twist are usually Quite Pleasant to me but this broken beat situation, with tanzanian duo zawose queens, who showcase the polyrhythms of the wagogo culture and who i love, is godddd tier.
the humpty dance - digital underground
after a year and a half of personal training in which we learned the skills to get hench, me and kay have waved goodbye to our trainer (thanks pennie!! get pennie if you too wanna learn the skills to get hench) and joined a gym independently. this new gym is above a garage on an industrial road. it is run by the largest man i have ever met. it has a central focus on keeping teenage boys out of knife crime. it honestly fucking rocks. i don’t think i’m ever going to feel Chill at a gym, one of the most cis spaces i can imagine, but this one feels friendly and i don’t feel judged or weird for being there. everyone’s just doing their own thing. furthermore, the playlist slaps. old school hip hop, grime, a sprinkling of justin timberlake. get ready for even buffer arms from me in the coming months.
orange peel - sopwith camel
been listening to a lot of valentine comar’s breakfast show on worldwide fm this month. her selections are always very wide ranging, and when she digs deep into the west coast 1960s psychedelic, like sopwith camel, i love it the most.
guatemaya - doctor nativo
we had a bunch of new hosts in for trial shows on kitchen radio this month — loads of great stuff which i feel privileged to get to have an opinion on! i straight up lifted this guatemalan reggae/cumbia track this from one of those shows, casa abierta with regina caracol, which sounded so good. i can’t wait to hear more from her show (and the others) in the coming months.
choked - sons and daughters
in a fucking terrible mood because the people around you want to encourage you to, once again, break free from your unhealthy coping mechanisms and take basic care of yourself? angry music from your teenage years is there to help you be even more of a brat (derogatory) about it.
loved sons and daughters. since they were also signed to domino records and also from glasgow, natch they were popular on the franz ferdinand forums. i don’t think i had even heard any of their music before i went to clive’s record shop and bought their debut full length album, the repulsion box, on cd. maybe i’d heard a clip of dance me in on a myspace page? i do remember it feeling like a big deal; i’d bought it basically on sight unseen recommendation rather than because i’d heard any singles, or read about it in nme etc. i took it back to my mum’s car in the fort road car park, listened to it on the cd player while waiting for her to finish work. some of it (dance me in, taste the last girl) was immediately a hook! some of it (like choked!) was way darker than i was used to! and in that way, i think it was a pivotal album for me, because it was a lesson in putting in the work to Get It, something which i benefit from immensely now.

cloud land - stereolab
i’m on this mission to Understand stereolab ever since a) basically every band or artist i ever loved or respected cited stereolab as an inspiration and/or featured laetitia sadier, and more importantly, b) they got announced pretty high up the bill at we out here this year. what’s going on with stereolab! this new song of theirs, cloud land, is quite nice; it hit me in the vaguely liminal space of st pancras station (on the way to hatchard, of course) and something about the electronic soundscape and the escalators was a match made in heaven. if you like stereolab and you can tell me what i should listen to, please do!
