#87.5: radio killed the substack star

i briefly met cosmic bob at apricot ballroom in february, after which i signed up to his excellent substack, where he highlights radio shows and club nights/experience he’s enjoyed lately. i have been listening to a lot of radio recently too! and i thought i’d take the opportunity to promote some of the non-linga sound based shows i’ve really enjoyed in the last month.

i also thought i’d send this out as a separate mid-(now late)-month email, just because the main monthly note is getting a bit unwieldy, and i want to continue to focus it on the playlist. whatever phil said last aug/sep about feeling like there wasn’t enough about what i’d been up to in the last edition, stuck with me.

so this is a place to recommend other people’s work and not talk so much about my life! i think this will be a semi-regular feature, whenever i’ve gathered up a bunch of good radio or musically-related media to share.

this month i’m gonna focus on kitchen radio. as well as being a resident [tune in to sound service station!! this saturday 9-11am xx], i also spend a couple of saturdays a month as the in-studio producer. this means that i get to meet so many great people with incredible music taste, deep digs and wide ranging interests. i really love it!

admittedly, this month, playing a dj set until 2.30am, trying to hit the hay before 3am with ringing ears and then crawling out of bed at 7.30am to go and open up the studio the next morning was… not ideal. i will do it again in a pinch (the pinch being: the next two weeks, lol), but it’s hard going. i was so tired that sometimes i would turn my head, and it would take a moment for my eyes to catch up, sort of like being seasick. i would make some complaint about being in my 30s but i think i would have been bothered by this past the age of, like, 19 haha.

so tired i might vom x

so, here are some of the shows i’ve enjoyed producing/listening to this month:

casa abierta

wide ranging styles of latin american music with well-researched ties to cultural movements, politics and history in the region, hosted by regina caracol. like the most informative party you’ve ever been to.

six degrees of separation

sanaa aka glumgirl puts together a broad playlist spanning countries and genres, with each track linked to the previous one in ways you could never imagine. some absolute gems.

digging in japan w/ suzy

lovely pal suzy babs of good good vintage fame spins some of the good good vintage records she picked up on a recent trip to japan.

radio babio

radio babio host nadia and i have known each other since doing student radio together in edinburgh about 15 years ago; feels very sweet to have shows on the same station again, in a different city, so many years later haha. this is a very affecting show of clips and art pieces on the theme of ‘voice’.

pasta la vista

the last two months’ editions of pasta la vista (firstly, yugoslavia special; secondly, hot drinks special) have been so fun to produce. the yugo ep introduced me to a ton of music and history; the hot drinks episode was just a fuckin hoot.

rave & ritual

lowkey i love jungle. darkskinn princess’s enthusiasm is second to none and her knowledge is streets (highways!!) ahead of mine, so this for me is a perfect little blast of an hour.

ibens radio

beautiful chilled folksy vibes to start your week off in a very unassuming manner. perfect radio voice too, really makes your desk feel cosy.

+ we have a fundraiser atm to cover running costs for the next year and keep it free for the hosts. if you like sound service station, or any of these shows i’ve linked, consider chucking the station a few quid. everyone puts so much work in, it’s an impressive feat of passion and organisation!

upcoming dj dates:

27 march: hagglers corner all night
3 april: factory floor all night
10 april: shady grove, sidney and matilda
18 april: record store day, grub x hagglers
25 april: lift your feet, york railway studio

back soon w/ the march playlist xxxx
