Sometimes the Bobington Daily News isn’t really “news.” Sometimes it’s simply a letter we hope finds the person who needs it most. This one is for Isabelle and “Mr. Isabelle”.
Dear Isabelle and “Mr. Isabelle”,
I thought you might appreciate a little update.
Simon arrived safely. There was quite a crowd waiting for him…as there always is for the very good dogs. The Welcome Committee gets rather excited when one of Earth’s Great Hearts comes home.
I spotted him almost immediately. Perky ears. Bright eyes. Tail already working overtime.
He looked around for about three seconds before asking where you were. That’s perfectly normal. Nearly every angel asks that question first.
We explained that humans can’t come here until it’s their proper time. He nodded politely...then asked again anyway. He’s very persistent. I like that about him.
The first stop, of course, was the St. Francis Wellness Center. Now I know you’ll want this part of the report. St. Francis smiled before Simon even walked through the door. He placed a hand on Simon’s head...looked him in the eyes...and quietly said,
“There you are.”
That was all it took. No more epilepsy. No more seizures. No more cancer. No more aching body. No more medicines. No more tired days.
Just...Simon.
Healthy. Strong. Running so fast his legs can barely carry him. The kind of running that makes no sense whatsoever except to very happy dogs.
After that came New Angel Orientation. (It’s mostly paperwork. A surprising amount of paperwork, if I’m being honest.)
There are classes on cloud etiquette...
Advanced Tail Wagging...
How Not to Chase Cherubs...
And, of course...
Angel Wing Flight School.
Simon has already informed his instructor that he doesn’t intend to walk anywhere if flying is an option. I expect excellent grades.
Now...he did have one concern. Only one.
He wanted to make absolutely certain that you knew he hadn’t really gone anywhere.
You see, humans have a rather unfortunate design flaw. You believe that if you can’t see someone...they must no longer be there.
From up here...well…we know better. Simon can still see you. He knows when you’re talking to him. He knows when you miss him. He knows every time you smile because of something silly he once did. And just as soon as he earns his Angel Wing Certification...he fully intends to begin daily home visits.
I probably shouldn’t be telling you this...but I have seen his flight plan. It appears to involve checking on both of you daily...inspecting the kitchen...making sure the foster dogs are behaving...and supervising absolutely everything.
So...pay attention. You may feel a familiar presence beside you. You may catch yourself smiling for no reason. You may hear a sound that reminds you of him. Or perhaps you’ll simply have one of those moments where your heart suddenly feels lighter.
That’ll be Simon. Right where he’s always been. Love has never paid much attention to the distance between Heaven and Earth.
One last thing...Simon asked me to remind you that loving another dog someday will never mean loving him less. He knows that you’re aware of this but just wanted to make sure you know it’s all okay.
Our hearts were designed to grow...not divide. He knows that better than anyone now.
Now that he’s here, he’s in very good company. We’ve already shown him where the best sunbeams are.
Very truly yours,
Bob the Writing Cat
P.S. Simon says not to worry about his wings. He had one slightly awkward landing in a cloud this morning, but he’s convinced he’ll have the whole flying thing mastered by Tuesday.
