The Fourth of July weekend is upon us, and I can’t help but think about all of the blessings this country has given me and my family.
My grandfather came to the United States as a migrant farm worker.
He left behind a goat ranch in Mexico. He followed the growing season, traveling from one state to another, working with the soil until he planted roots for our family in South Texas. It set my dad on a path to pursue a career in Tejano music, a tradition I continued for 30 years until announcing my campaign for Congress.
That’s the American dream in action.
My grandfather built a life for us and gave my dad the opportunity to follow his dream. He had no idea his grandson would be able to run for Congress.
In this country, with enough dedication and God’s grace on your side, you can go far. I truly believe that.
Real patriotism isn’t about who waves the biggest flag or speaks the loudest. It’s not about seeing our country as flawless either. It’s about fighting to make sure the American dream is still attainable for future generations.
Whenever my youngest son Rodrigo joins us on the campaign trail, he leads us in a rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance.
He’s a patriot.
We’ve raised him to love South Texas, to be curious about the world, to treat his elders with respect. That’s the job of a father. To create opportunities for their children. It’s what my grandfather did, and my father, and it’s what every kid in South Texas deserves: leaders who actually show up for them.
South Texas has been neglected and voiceless.
I’m running for Congress to give our community the voice it deserves.
