Recently I posted on LinkedIn about a non-business incident that — upon thinking about it — provided an excellent application to business.

These kinds of things actually happen quite often, which means it’s probably a good idea to keep our eyes and ears open for them. Otherwise, there are gems of potential wisdom that end up being wasted.

My friend Damian Lewandowicz, CEO of Poznań, Poland-based Uxtivity, commented…

“I love how events from different areas of life make great anecdotes in a business environment. I used to {experience} many metaphors from chess — it’s also a real ‘goldmine of references’ to use.”

Damian has my total agreement!

Even knowing next to nothing about chess (other than about two weeks of a chess run at about 12 years old when an older cousin introduced me to it), it’s easy to recognize lessons regarding strategy, knowledge, study, practice, adjustments, overconfidence, not giving up even when all appears lost, and so much more.

Indeed...

Key Point: Life’s events and situations in one area can teach us a lot in all the many important areas of life — financial, physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, social, relational, etc. — if we just take time to pay attention and grasp the lessons.

Profound: As Damian adds, “Those moments really teach us how complex and yet coherent our whole life and activity really is. On some level there are similar patterns in sports, parenthood, business, leadership, and marketing. There are so many lessons to be found, and it’s truly amazing to discover them.”

Indeed, if we become willing to look at life through the “lens of lessons,” it’s remarkable what we can come up with and how we can benefit, both ourselves and others.

Today’s Exercise: Make it a point to notice the lesson(s) in everything. It actually doesn’t even take much practice. Once you make the decision to do this — to really “see a lesson” — it’s astonishing how often you’ll begin to do so. Be sure to have your pen and notepad or your smartphone recorder ready. :-)

Genuine Influence: The Go-Giver Way

In an AI-driven world, human connection is your ultimate advantage.

If you’d like your team to sell more, lead better, and serve clients at a higher level — grounded in empathy and authentic influence — let’s talk about your next meeting or conference.
