Morning darkness engulfed me as I walked into the kitchen to brew a fresh cup of coffee. There is such a quiet peace in starting the day this way. I brought my coffee up to my cushion and sat in meditation for more than thirty minutes as the morning light gradually emerged. My focus for this week’s meditation is “the part of me that blames and resents others.” Coffee, meditation, quiet, rising light... Life is good.
It made me reflect on how our legal system functions as an arena built entirely to assign blame—or “liability,” to use the formal jargon. Judges and juries weigh evidence to determine financial awards and punishments. Yet, while legally assigned blame is real, it differs entirely from the blame born of my own internal projections. Placing fault on outside circumstances or other people is usually a false accusation, because the true source of my reaction is always found in the mirror.
Do I want to blame others? Yes.
Do I want to blame others so I feel better? Yes.
Do I want to shift responsibility away from myself? Absolutely.
Yet the truth remains: the core responsibility rests with me. External circumstances and other people’s actions are completely beyond my control; the only real choice I have is how I choose to react. Taking ownership of my reactions strips away the drama, allowing the reality of a situation to surface—where most incidents turn out to be entirely blameless. The blame game is nothing more than an ego construct, built to falsely justify a sense of superiority.
Namaste, my friends. Wishing you a peaceful, blame-free day.
