When Jenna Mammina came into the studio with Rolf Sturm on guitar I asked them to play the song called “Wicked Game”. For me it was a classic that could never be replicated.
But, if anyone could put a unique spin on the song with her own twist, it would be Jenna. Rolf and Jenna rehearsed the song and we started our recording session with it.
Unfortunately, for me, it wasn’t really coming together the way I had hoped, so we put the song aside and went on to record a whole album of music in one day.
At the end of the session, we were satisfied and they were relaxed so I asked the question... “Can we try Wicked Game one more time?”
Without any prompting from me, Rolf started playing the bassline - soft, low and slow with so much space it was haunting. I couldn’t have asked for a better choice of notes for the performance. Jenna matched the haunting quality of the guitar with her voice.
It was effortless and magical. It was a take. What it took was 10 hours of playing other songs to achieve the space needed for this version. You won’t hear another like it.
