The longer you hodl, the more you realize:

Bitcoin security is mostly about habits.

10 rules to remember:

If you don’t control the keys, you don’t control the bitcoin.
Exchanges are for buying and transferring — not long-term storage.
Match the security to the amount.
Small amounts can live on a hot wallet.
Or, even an exchange.
Larger amounts deserve cold storage.
And, these amounts are all relative.
Match the wallet to the purpose.
Trading bitcoin is one thing.
Spending bitcoin is one thing.
Saving bitcoin is another.
Long-term BTC = harder to access.
Convenience is the enemy of security.
Save critical information OFFLINE.
Seed phrases, backups, and recovery instructions should never live in screenshots, cloud drives, or email drafts.
Redundancy matters.
One backup can fail.
No backup is game over.
Find your middle ground.
Keep your holdings private.
The less people know, the better.
Avoid sharing your bitcoin holdings.
Probing questions are a red flag.
Bitcoin scams are still just scams.
Phishing, fake support accounts, sketchy links, impersonation, urgency tactics — crypto didn’t invent them.
It did, however, make the consequences often irreversible so be aware.
Simplicity beats complexity.
A setup you fully understand is safer than an elaborate one you don’t.
Self-custody means self-responsibility.
No help desk.
No chargebacks.
No password reset button.
That’s the tradeoff… and the power.

They apply to anything of value, like banking apps, payment accounts, and the digital access we use every day. Most of what we manage now lives digitally, often across tools we barely think about. If you lost your phone or laptop, would you still feel in control of what someone could access?

It’s not just setup either. It’s mindset. Spotting red flags, avoiding phishing, and resisting urgency matter as much as storage.

Bitcoin just makes the consequences more final, but that tradeoff is also what enables true ownership and sovereignty over your assets. The same habits still apply. You remain the first and last line of defense.
