In my first year of high school, my English teacher asked us to write a poem about the disappointment of the American Dream, inspired by Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
I stumbled across the poem I’d written (7 years later) and wanted to share.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
STARGAZING
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Gazing at the winking stars,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Calling out to me softly.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Begging, inviting, taunting,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Daring me to catch them quickly.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Filling my thoughts night after night,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Until I am consumed.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Filling my head day after day,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
The dream continued and loomed.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Weaving into my brain,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Holding me locked tight.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
If I ever thought of failing,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
I would begin to shake with fright.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Gazing at the biggest star,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Blinding even at day.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Taunting, shouting, mocking,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Daring me to feel it’s rays.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
I made my decision,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Without a doubt in place.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
I would fly up to the sun you see,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Run my fingers along its face.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
So I devoted myself to training,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Preparing to launch in the sky.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Then the day had finally come,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
I would finally get to fly.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
But alas!
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
So close to touching this dream,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
I began to fret and burn.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
So crying, I take off this helmet,
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
To write for what I yearn.
