In addition to new arrivals of spring birds, there has been animal activity to witness as well.
One surprise for me was seeing a Groundhog (otherwise known as a Woodchuck) eating in a tree. Apparently they are pretty good climbers especially when escaping a predator but this one was seeking out some plant material up high in an elm tree.
Another mammal with big teeth is the muskrat. Very common throughout Minnesota, this pair has a burrow at the edge of the pond rather than a domed house of mud for its lodging.
Over the past twenty years, coyotes have become permanent residents in our neighborhood. In the springtime with hungry pups to feed, they can be seen making morning runs for food.

As the spring bird migration is winding down, the local mammals have been active in the backyard.
