Kelpie Wilson · The Biochar Prepper

I have been working pretty hard for many years now to create the ultimate DIY biochar toolkit. My goal is to help myself and others to become more resilient and self-reliant by utilizing the power of biochar to improve soils, make better compost, clean water, and provide sanitation and biomass energy at the scale of a homestead, farm, village or small town.

I think I have succeeded in many ways, though I am always looking for new things to learn. I can offer The Biochar Handbook, the Ring of Fire biochar kiln, this ongoing Biochar Prepper substack, and now the self-paced version of my Practical Biochar course at Regenerative Living Online. Many thanks to Javan Bernakevitch who contacted me shortly after The Biochar Handbook was published last year, and invited me to present a nine-session comprehensive course through his platform at Regenerative Living Online.

We had more than 80 people register for the live version of the course and I worked really hard pulling together everything I have learned about biochar since 2008 or so, when I began my work in the field. It was almost like writing the Handbook all over again because I could include some things left out of the book, plus ongoing new knowledge. I think it turned out very well, and as you can see from the testimonials below, lots of students agreed.

Now I would like to invite you to join me next Thursday, August 28 at 10am Pacific Time for a free webinar to learn more about the course so you can decide if you want to get access to this resource.

Here is more info that I hope you will pass on to anyone in your circle who might be interested:

Kelpie has spent decades refining biochar methods in her garden, on farms, and in forest restoration projects. In this live 45-minute webinar, she will share:

▪New burn pile techniques that make more biochar than ever from a simple backyard pile

▪How to build "chocolate cake" terra preta soil

▪A no-turn composting method that makes two batches of rich biochar compost each year

▪Fresh insights on biochar's role in holding soil moisture

▪How biochar can help reduce fire risk

▪How the Biochar On Site movement could help you start your own "biochar as a service" business

During the webinar, we'll be launching the Practical Biochar Online Course, which farmers, gardeners, and designers have LOVED:

"Regenerative Living's Practical Biochar course with Kelpie Wilson exceeded my expectations. I learned so many new things about biochar, including its history, applications and opportunities. I was already a big fan of Kelpie prior to taking this course, and now I am an even bigger fan! If you are interested in the world of biochar, I can't think of a better place to start."

"This course will arm you with newfound appreciation, knowledge and enthusiasm for something that you currently probably underestimate. Biochar has a wealth of applications and forms a necessary base for a holistic approach to landcare and the support of healthy human and animal life. Prepare to be inspired and equipped to integrate the power of Carbon into your life."
Andrew Jones
La Paz, México

"The course provided more depth than I was expecting; it was worth every penny!
While I have been buying in bagged biochar (Wakefield is the brand available in a local garden center) and I have been reading and hearing about the benefits for a few years, I was very intimidated by the idea of making biochar. I actually thought it was surely too complicated and nearly impossible for the average person to make. I would hear terms like "kiln," "moisture meter," and "feedstock" on podcasts when I was a newer gardener and assumed it was a job left to professionals with lots of expensive technical equipment. Kelpie's recent interview on the no-till podcast was the very first time I thought, "Oh, maybe I can do this myself." So, I took off my headphones, walked back into the house, ordered the book, and registered for the class. The course totally shifted my mindset and expanded my understanding and enthusiasm for the potential environmental (in the broadest sense of the term) benefits of making and using biochar."

"While taking this course a friend hired me (not even done with the course and already getting a return) to write a biochar fact sheet for her compost business. I was able to use the resources provided in the course to provide some solid info--but more importantly, while writing that fact sheet I had an epiphany that was mind blowing! Synthesizing information about plant health as determined by Brix, integrated pest management, range and forest health and finally the missing piece---BIOCHAR and nutrient cycling---I think I've discovered a solution to Pine Beetle infestations. These are such exciting thoughts! I can't wait to apply my hypothesis. I appreciate all of the ground work Kelpie has done over these many years that allows me to get a head start on understanding the benefits of biochar and use it in new and beneficial ways. "
Janet Hofmann

Education Coordinator, Conservation District

"This course lived up to its name and more. Kelpie is a pioneer and leader in the growing field of biochar, and she shared her knowledge in a consistently engaging format. The course was also well organized, with resources available in a variety of formats. If anything, students were more excited about the potential and use of biochar at the end of the course - and well equipped to engage in the work of spreading awareness and use."
