United States Glass in Gas City

The Gas Boom of 1887 brought an influx of laborers to Grant County to work in area foundries and glass factories. This population growth was distributed throughout the county.

During the Gas Boom, Mill Township's population experienced staggering growth, skyrocketing from 1809 to 6770 between 1890 and 1900. Similarly, Gas City witnessed a dramatic increase, expanding nearly twenty-five times to reach 3662 by the end of the same period.

United Glass Company was one of the factories seeking free land, water, and gas. The company was organized as a trust of eleven loosely related factories stretching from West Virginia to Indiana, producing molded and cut glass. The Gas City branch was said to be fully automated and produced mostly molded products. Later, cut glass lines were added.

The Depression years led to the closing of United States Glass, but collectors value the company's glass. The last major producer of glass in Gas City closed down in the 1970s
