Stream It This Week: TV Premieres July 13–19, 2026

It’s a dangerous time of year: There are fewer new TV shows and movies being released for me to write about (blame it on mid-summer), and it just hit a record high of 109 degrees here in Salt Lake City (blame it on Satan coming to reclaim The West). I’ll soldier on as best I can.

Monday, July 13

Hot Ones: Extra Heat (Netflix) New series: Well, not so much new as borrowed from YouTube and twisted into a blatant promotional vehicle for other Netflix shows—but it’s still hosted by Sean Evans, so there’s that. Stars of upcoming Netflix shows will chow down on increasingly spicy wings while attempting to talk up those Netflix shows, and the first guest of Hot Ones: Extra Heat is Will Ferrell of The Hawk (more on that coming up). Now that I’ve warmed up to this idea, I think every network should have its own Hot Ones challenge show that requires mandatory participation from its stars—imagine Hulu putting Steve Martin and Martin Short through The Last Dab to tout the latest season of Only Murders in the Building. Backrooms (VOD rent/buy) Movie streaming premiere: I know, I know—I pushed Backrooms hard last week, but at the time of that post, A24’s video-on-demand schedule had it out on July 7. The release was then pushed back, likely to give Backrooms: Everything Must Go, an extended-cut edition that runs 16 minutes longer, a theatrical boost. Anyway: The original-length Backrooms will be available to rent or buy on July 14, and it should arrive on HBO Max in the fall if you’re averse to VOD prices (justifiably so—it’ll be $20 to rent, and $25 to buy, even though you never really “own” a digital purchase). Lucky (Apple TV) New series: Ironically named conwoman Lucky (Anya Taylor-Joy) finds herself hunted by the FBI and a ruthless crime boss (Annette Bening, still living her best Dutton Ranch villain life) after a multimillion-dollar heist goes all kinds of wrong. Action-crime series Lucky has even more going for it than Taylor-Joy and Bening, like showrunner Jonathan Tropper (Your Friends & Neighbors, Warrior, Banshee), the source material of Marissa Stapley’s bestselling book, and a killer cast that includes Timothy Olyphant, William Fichtner, and Clifton Collins Jr. Two of seven (as in, lucky?) episodes stream on July 15. The Hawk (Netflix) New series: Remember Stick, the Apple TV series starring Owen Wilson as a former hotshot golf pro mentoring a young potential hotshot golf pro? (It premiered just a year ago; TV time dysmorphia is real.) The Hawk follows a similar setup, but with Will Ferrell as former hotshot golf pro Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins and Owen’s brother Luke Wilson as a rep for Mike’s Hard Lemonade, which sponsors both The Hawk (Ferrell’s character) and The Hawk (the show). Also, as with most Ferrell characters, this chin-bearded narcissist is only out for his own comeback glory. Twenty years ago, The Hawk would have been a movie selling out theaters, but now it’s a 10-episode streaming comedy with a stacked cast (including Molly Shannon, Fortune Feimster, Jimmy Tatro, David Hornsby, Katelyn Tarver, and Chris Parnell). Obsession (Peacock) Movie streaming premiere: Even more so than Backrooms, the indie-flick mega-success of 2026 is Obsession, which has made $370 million worldwide against a $1 million production budget (to which, I ask, “What did they spend the $1 million on?” It sure as hell wasn’t lighting). Despite the low-end spend, Obsession is an absolutely terrifying watch based on a simple premise: Bear (Michael Johnston) has a crush on his coworker Nikki (Inde Navarrette), so he makes a seemingly innocuous “wish” for her to become obsessed with him, which leads to bloody, wrenching consequences. Obsession is a different kind of horror movie that jolts in unexpected ways—so much so that I’m actually looking forward to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot from director Curry Barker. Crowning at the Prom (Lifetime) Movie premiere: I’ll never stop marveling at Lifetime’s knack for nailing a movie title—I mean, Crowning at the Prom? It’s all right there! So perfect, you don’t even need to see the movie itself. But if you do feel compelled to watch, here’s the setup: “On the brink of prom queen glory and a coveted athletic scholarship, obsessive overachiever Kat Walker (Anwen O’Driscoll) is determined to maintain the flawless image she’s built for herself and for her devoted single mother, Abigail (Danielle Panabaker). While concealing a late-term pregnancy and struggling under the weight of her pursuit of perfection, Kat’s carefully controlled world begins to unravel.” You may have been too swept away on that journey to notice that The Flash’s Danielle Panabaker is now playing mom roles (TV time dysmorphia strikes again). He’ll Never Find Me (Lifetime) Movie premiere: Crowning at the Prom obviously wins the week (and maybe the year), but Thursday’s My Daughter’s Trapped in a Throuple (on Lifetime Movie Network) and today’s He’ll Never Find Me are solid entries in Lifetime’s movie titles portfolio. As for the plotlines, He’ll Never Find Me sounds eerily familiar: “After fleeing an abusive marriage and faking her own death, a woman builds a new life on a farm in a quiet Midwestern town—until a viral video exposes her identity and unleashes a deadly chain of events. Now, with her violent past closing in and a killer on the loose, she must confront the truth, protect the man she loves, and fight to survive before her carefully built world is destroyed for good.” This is the script for at least three Jason Statham movies, slightly tweaked and gender-swapped. Well played, Lifetime—but where’s the trailer?
